As far as I know, you can open content in another app, like a youtube video in metrotube or youtube, yes, but you can't directly open an app and do nothing with it.

Thats correct. Windows Phone essentially has "default programs" now with WP8 like windows has had for years, where certain file extensions, url types (not uri), and links are launched within an app from the browser, however, they cannot just launch the app and do nothing, and they still open in a browser first, depending on the implementation. Thats why when you try downloading a file or visiting an unsupported url type (like ftp://) it (Windows Phone) lets you know there is no compatible program and asks if you would like to search the store for a supporting application.


And if it's possible like you said, the developer must provide the code, and I don't think Nokia gave out those info.

Nokia DOES have a way for launching apps from App Social, however, OEMs are allowed to access restricted and custom protocols and code, as well as integrate into the system. For all we know, Nokia App Social could be using the systems internal way of launching apps the same way it launches apps from a tile or in the app list.
