Nokia's Glance feature - How does it work?

Ok the title may be a little off-putting but how does Nokia's glance feature work on Lumias with different screen technologies? I know it would have less battery consumption on Lumias with OLED technology, but how about the ones equipped with LCD? And since Glance takes advantage of the proximity sensor, would this also impact battery life? And in addition to the glance feature is the tap-to-wake function. I've noticed that this also uses the proximity sensor even when glance is turned off, why is this?

Nokia puts your LCD into a very-very-low-power-state, which only the manufacturer can access. This helps minimizing the battery consumption. Reports though are saying, that glance drains battery noticably on NL920's. Regarding the proximity sensor, I can imagine that it is used to avoid your phone being "double-tapped" in your pocket.

I covered proximity sensor with my hand and double tapped still wake my phone.
