October - Is The Wait Worth It?

To those who want to know just what my question is, and not why I'm asking this -

Will it be worth waiting until this October for a new Lumia 7xx Model? If not, then is the 730/640XL something to drag for 2 long years?

My Lumia 920 recently broke, and the repair costs being too high, I decided to buy a new phone in a few months, remaining with a 'senior citizen' phone until that idea materializes (it's been 2 months now)

I don't want to shift to Android and it's hassles, but feel compelled to do so, given the limited choice of quality handsets in the market from Microsoft @ the ~250USD/15000INR range.

Here, I can either opt for the Xiaomi Mi4 (towards which I'm starting to get inclined to), or for the Lumia 730/640XL (both of which fade in terms of specs to the former).

I can wait, but SHOULD I? I don't really want to end up with the same phone I could buy right now, two months down the line.

(Willing to wait if that means I get to stick to Windows Phone)

Wait.. Even i want to buy a 640xl but im waiting for a 730/830 successor. There are 6 phones including 2 flagships coming with windows 10 installed.. But i dont think there will be big changes in mid range windows 10 compared to 730/XL but i would still wait.. There is a SD 6** phone coming but i think that would be >15k

Sounds good enough. I won't be looking at a good processor, but rather at the camera. ' Long as I have used Windows Phone, the experience has been quite uniform. I'm really hoping they bring out some great phones.

Camera is definately going to be better on the new phones compared to 730/xl.. But if you're not waiting then you should go for XL and not 730

I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding here... Two actually...

October? Who said October? There is no release month we know about yet. Availability will necessarily lag behind announcement at any rate.

A new 7xx model? So far all indicators are that sometime around Win 10 Mo going official there will be two devices that equate to a 940 and a 940 XL.

Anything else will come later still. My gut feeling is that a 5xx and 5xx XL will come in spring to satisfy the "budget" part of the equation just as talkman and Cityman will fill the "flagship" part this fall. I would bet money the "enterprise" level will come last and be in the mid-range or 7xx and 7xx XL class.

I see. I do not mind waiting for availability given that this phone might even announced to be coming ~ mid Q4. I asked because I just didn't want to wait another 2-3 months for the same device that I can buy right away.
Also - is the camera on a 640XL better than the 730?

Yes.. Better than 730.. XL has more features like rich capture, living imgs, etc with lumia camera 5.. 730 lacks those features..

The only high-end feature that 640 XL camera is missing would be OIS or Optical Image Stabilization, PureView and (arguably) True 16:9. It beats 730 with a 13MP Zeiss lens shooter, a respectable 1/3" Sensor and f/2.0 aperture. If you like selfies it has the same 5MP front facing camera that everybody likes on 730...

I'm with rumorednow but with some slight modifications. After Microsoft releases the 940 and 940 XL this fall, i bet Microsoft will go silent on more phone releases for quite some time, perhaps a year. The 640 is the Lumia 520 for 2015-2016. It will get updated to Windows 10 and is budget enough. I don't think there will ever be a Lumia 7XX. Let me explain why I think this.

In Nadella's email he states that they're focusing on three areas for phones: value phone, business/enterprise, and flagship. They've got the value phone with the 640. There is no reason to come out with another budget phone for at least a year. The flagship will soon come out in the fall. And lastly there is the business segment, which means businesses and not consumers like us. This doesn't even necessarily mean new phones. It could just mean the flagship devices will be sold to businesses for enterprise use.

My point is there won't be any more Lumia 7 or 8 series phones. So if you don't want the upcoming flagship due to price, I'd get either a 640 or 830 right now or even 930 if you can find it on the cheap, because the specific future phone you hope comes out may never exist in Microsoft's new direction with their phone strategy.

It is all just spinning stories: mine, yours and others.... Yours is a pretty good one too.

I still like the one two punch of high-end this fall followed quickly by a value phone in spring. Too many consumers will say the flags cost too much.

The Enterprise models will be mid-tier to give corporations something of lasting power and decent future proofing at an attractive bottom line. The reason that one has to wait is for Universal Apps to start maturing and for Microsoft to further enhance and push their App suites. Set 'em up on 10 desktop and then hook 'em on Win 10 Mo.

I'm afraid I disagree (or maybe that's just coming out of my hopefulness to not having to side-grade to the 640XL). If a 9xx series smartphone is unveiled later this year, it would make no sense not wanting to follow that up with a 'pseudo-flagship' and a third comparatively lower end. In markets like India, I believe, that would almost translate to a long dormant period for MS phones. The phones to follow may not come immediately, but I expect them to at least be a Christmas present.
But again, as RumoredNow said - they're all spinning stories.

I've decided to wait (hopeful risk) on another wave of MS phones, and repair my 920 until then.

Why not have the three segments with Windows 10 Mobile from the box? Any other way will annihilate a segment of consumers and I happen to in the value segment.

Its no secret, holidays are targeted for sales and MS should have a plan.....
