Office 365 Personal?

Hi all,
Ok I had an old Version of Office 2004, was supported on Windows XP.
To be honest I haven't used it in years, Well I can't cause my old XP PC died and the install CD is lost.

Now I am running Windows 10 on a new build, ( the pc is new build) I need Microsoft Word and more specific it's built in pdf editor.
As i'm a single user i wanted to buy the Office 365 Personal, as ATM i have a Home PC and a Windows 10 Phone.
Personal is $69 3 devices, 1 PC, 1 Tablet and 1 phone, 1TB of OneDrive storage is great, but i also am thinking of buying the Surface 4
On Microsoft Store Chat i was told that the Surface Pro 4 is a PC, ie: A Laptop as it's OS is a PC based Windows 10 full install and if i installed the Office 365 Personal on it, the PC version will lose its live status and will be read only.

Ok as i was writhing this post, i used the Talk to an Expert tab in the Microsoft Store.
Very Helpful in many ways.
1st; AS Office 365 Personal has no one month free Trial, I was offered 13 months full Office 365 Personal for a 1 year subscription with extra Skype minutes. Ok Great
2nd; It seams the Surface line is causing confusion. But i was informed that i can use the Surface as either. It can be a PC or a Tablet.
So If like me and already have a PC, the Surface can use the Tablet device slot.

You can use the Surface how you like but I am 100% sure it does count as a PC when it comes to Office, my wife has Office 365 home version, she has one copy used on an original Surface Pro, my boy has one usage, one of my daughters another and I use two, one on my desktop and the other on my SP3.

Because both of mine are on one MS account we effectively give away 1TB of storage.................

The best way to purchase (Lease) Office 365 as far as I can work out is to go for the home version, you get five uses, so in your case you would be using two on your PC and Surface, you then have three spare uses that you can let members of your family use.

Who is to say what a family is in this modern mixed up world :wink:

I did at one time have an 7 inch tablet, I could use the mobile Office apps on this and that doesn't count, but I do believe MS have an over 10 inch tablet ruling on Office 365 so all of the current Surface line count as PC's, again that may not mean you couldn't use the apps, but it's not the same as full blown Office.

I don't know what the US price is, but the UK it's ?59.99 for one personal licence and only ?20 more for the 5 user Home edition, no brainer for me.

Just remembered, when my wife also had a laptop she had her copy of 365 on that and was reduced to using the apps (Which is just Word, Excel and Powerpoint) on her Surface Pro, and although functional, its not the same as full blown Office which includes the apps above but as full blown programs, but also includes Access, Publisher, Outlook, and a far better OneNote.

Ok the extended family
if i buy the home, as it has 5 users x3 devices each (5x PC, tablet,phone) and 5 TB of OneDrive on 5x one TB accounts.
So one TB per account, max of 5, in Total 5TB?

Ok This looks great, but what am i going to do with 5 TB of OneDrive storage?
Can i create a restore point in OneDrive?
I can back up files, pictures, video etc but can i reinstall my pc OS and settings from a backup on OneDrive.
I can use other Online Backup services, but they cost $, if i have 1/5TB of OneDrive, can i backup my pc?

You only get 1TB per user, so as mentioned I use 2 365 uses (One on desktop and the other on SP3) and I only get 1TB, if I had 5 PC's all with 365 on one Microsoft account I would still only get 1TB.

So with us my wife, son and daughter and myself each get 1TB, so in effect giving away 1TB compared to 5 individual users where you would get the full 1TB each making the 5TB.

And don't forget, your statement of "5 users x3 devices each (5x PC, tablet,phone)" the tablets would be using the apps rather than the full blown programs.

Go to the store and search for Word, as you can see it is supposedly limited to 10.1 tablets, I know for a fact that they will run on larger, but as mentioned, although OK, they are not the same as full blown Word/Office suite.

Me again but I am in the UK and on an early shift so need to get to bed.

Backing up a PC is changing, so much of the information is now in the cloud so I can wipe a PC, re-install 10 and all my contacts and so much other data comes back (May take a few days), I now save all my files to OneDrive so as an example my eldest daughter got married last month, I typed out my speech using Word on my desktop PC and saved to OneDrive, as I took my Surface Pro 3 to the wedding (We were away for a few days) I could easily finish off the speech on the SP3.

It doesn't fully take away the need for a proper back up, but as I have reset several PC's in the last year and had no problems, I am happy to carry on working this way.

Although I admit I do have a 1TB portable USB hard drive as well.

Hi, yes i was informed that it's only 1 PC, i was also later informed by a different tech chat that a Surface Pro can either be a PC or a Tablet.
The examples i was given were,
An existing Home PC, the Surface can be tablet device.
The Surface as a PC, an ipad can be the Tablet device or any other tablet.
I forgot to ask if i had 2 surface Pro's and no PC
But i think it depends on the chat help you get.
The 1st chat offered 365 Home with a free trial, but when i said i was just interested in 365 Personal, they offered to include a 1 month extra for free.
i buy a 1 year subscription and included was a one month extra wilt full storage and Skype benefits, which to be honest is way better than a free trial with no storage or free Skype minutes.
The 2nd chat was about devices and if i bought a surface pro, where it take up a slot.
Different Chat but was told, As a Surface pro is a full PC it will use the PC slot on the 365 Office.

In the Microsoft store where i have the Surface 4 in my cart, it has Talk to an expert tab
This is premium service. A Joy to use. Total complete answers.
I asked if i can use the Surface Pro 4 as a PC or a Tablet on my Office 365 Personal account.
The Answer was Both. I can use the Surface as either a PC or a Tablet on my devices for Office.

Do you have a Windows Phone, i use a 640xl, kinda big, taking me a year to get used to the large size, but in a caffie the other day, someone said i had a disguised iphone, F*** go figure, i hate ios.
I also use OneDrive, But last month i lost 25 GB, but also Microsoft are only offering 50GB @ €1.99/month.
I also have an external 1 TB HD and a Sorry to say a WD 4TB My Cloud, What a Piece of S*** is the MyCloud, it is not a Windows user friendly storage solution, its a Time Machine Mac device that's imported over to Windows. Rubbish!

So Here i am tring to now backup to a cloud.

Yes, got a good job a couple of years ago so I can treat myself, so I have a 950XL, I had a 1520 so size is relative..............

I used to run a small ISP offering cloud services back in 2000 before it was called the cloud, so its not new to me.
