Official Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 Discussion and Problem Solving Thread

Are you sure the Nokia software was trying to reinstall Cyan/8.1 (instead of Black/8.0)? I ask because even long after the 8.1 update was released for some models, Nokia's servers were still reporting the latest available firmware as Lumia Black when I checked many product codes.

Check what the tool says at first i.e. "You can install software version 3051.40000...." vs "3051.50009...". If the first number after the first decimal is 4 (xxxx.4xxxx), it's trying to reinstall Black or lower. If it's xxxx.5xxxx, it's trying to reinstall Cyan or higher.

I have a 1520 and the version it is trying to install is (1028.3534.1347.2001) which is the last firmware sent by AT&T in march.

I had to use a different USB port and now I was able to downgrade.

Microsoft's "Video Moments" app does not work for me on Update 1.
I have a Lumia 925 with Cyan and WP8.1 Update 1 DP
Can anyone check it too?
I un-reinstalled the app without better luck.

EDIT: Just found out that Bing Translator cannot trigger the camera. So when I try to translate via the camera, it gives me an error message.

Maybe Update 1 messes up with the camera for some apps?

I don't have Video Moments, but I do have Bing Translator and it's working fine with the camera on my 920 with Black. It looks like a few people are reporting camera problems with the update, but I haven't paid much attention. Doesn't seem to be enough to consider it a really widespread issue, but obviously that doesn't make it better for you. Have you tried a soft reset yet? Or any other of the 'generic' kinds of fixes?

Ok, I'm curious is anyone has backstepped a 1520 to trigger cyan, then gotten back on the DP for gdr. If so, hows the battery life?

I did this today. so far the battery life seems similar as it was prior to gdr, which has been good for me.

I did. Honestly don't notice a change, but my battery life was pretty solid beforehand. Atleast compared to my 1020...

I have the same problem on 920 in the UK

Thanks for the response. I tried restart, and uninstall - reinstall. I will soft reset now and check again. I will edit this with the results.

EDIT: After SOFT RESET the problems still exist. Both with Video Moments (doesn't even open) and Bing Translator (camera).

Would you mind checking Video Moments? It's only 5mb. I would be grateful.

Also is there anyone else facing the same problems?

I updated my Lumia 920 (Lumia Black) without any apparent issues. I have noticed one thing that is very annoying, all photos on the phone, whether the background for the start screen, lock screen image or viewing in the photos gallery all have what appear to be "Missing Pixels". The pixels are various colors but it almost appears like they are "transparent" as if I move the image around the screen the pixels change, but they do not match the background color. I have no idea what it is or what I can do about it. Should I try a hard reset? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I can't reproduce this bug.. Try a soft reset first.

Is it only for photos or the display in general?

WOW - just read through this whole thread, what a bunch of whiners. The Store Live tile not working sounds like life & death.

I'm going to assume there are quite a few folks out there with GDR1 working correctly on their phone.
- Store Live tile - did you try un-pinning the tile, making the adjustments in Store settings, then re-pinning it - hmmm, just might work (this would appear to be simple logic to induce the changed behavior)

- ' ... I can't get Cortana to work ...' - Cortana is NOT available everywhere - suggestion, above & beyond the crying, perhaps a bit more info: Where are you, What device (be specific - Hong Kong Variant on Duetche Telekom in Germany ?), what customizations have you done to try to get it/her ... or RTFM

- for those of you blaming Microsoft for putting out the update - each device is different (read that last part, again), based on your set of apps installed, where you are (software & firmware wise), carrier (modified) ROM ...

& last, but definitely not least - the way the user (yeah, YOU) takes care of his device. Do you download every app you see ?
do you forget to uninstall those ?
Do you periodically re-boot your device (once a week sounds about right) ? Memory & storage fragments, the reboot will mitigate that - Memory (RAM) to some extent, don't know how storage fragmentation is handled.

Soooo ... the fault could lie with the person who looks back at you, when you are in front of a mirror !
I'd love to know how many were successful in downloading the Update1 software, my complete process took less than an hour until I was whole again. I'm currently enjoying the goodness of Dev Preview Update 1, while you guys are wailing & gnashing your teeth, think about it.

I know that you don't mean to generalize, but you do!
There are some actual bugs, like mine and "sperry1625"'s and we are not whining. We are discussing to see if it's just us, or if the problem exists for everybody. And if it turns out to be a widespread problem, we want to give feedback to Microsoft. As simple as that.

Stop whining about "whiners". Every single thread is spammed by whiners who don't know how to read, and by whiners who whine about the other whiners. Just stop that please...

@sperry1625 It seems that bugs like the one you are facing and the one that I'm facing are random bugs.. Maybe a hard reset could help, but it's a time consuming procedure. Unfortunately I can't help you more with that...

You are right. I have 1520 with Cyan and Update 1.
Few Issues : Phone is getting hot really fast when browsing or navigating apps. Playing game like subway surfers is making the phone really hot in 5 mins.Battery drain is bad...i was getting around 30 hours backup in day with 8.1 and cyan and today my battery died in 16 hours.
I really feel that i should have waited. Not crying over it as i know its a beta...just putting it out here about issues i faced. I dont have any issues with slow ness or what so ever when i have cyan with it FYI.
HD videos in xbox video lags when brightness is on automatic. Doesn't lag when its set to medium or high or low.Closing and opening folders fast makes the tiles disappears from folder and u need ro reboot fix that.Youtube Desktop mode is not supported which i really hate it. So i dont think for just getting live folders and having these issues now was worth it. Thinking of removing DP and moving to production version of WP 8.1 and GOD thats a lengthy process 😞 MS i know its a beta but these known issues like battery drain etc should be tested before releasing out beta as it can really harm the phones.

Hi thanks for the reply! Here is what I have done/noticed since the update. I did remove the live folder (not saying this is the cause) but I did a full charge today and have noticed something interesting and strange. The charge has said (with two battery apps) I have 14-15 hours remaining ALL DAY. However, the % drop is very consistent with pre GDR1 update. I wonder if the battery is not accurately showing. Has anyone else seen this?

I generalized because that's 80% of what I read (a rather overwhelming majority) - Now, I realize that this thread was to report problems, but ...

You know what will fix your problem, but ' ... it's a time consuming procedure.'. I gotta ask, what prep did you do before installing the update ?

In my case, I moved ALL my apps back to the phone, took a good backup, removed the SDcard, hard reset the phone, let the restore happen, took the update & let it do it's thing (restore again). The prep (move apps & backup) took some time, but I was ready to install a clean update (and avoid potential problems).

A matter of '...you can pay me now, or pay me later ...' - plus I shutdown once a week, to allow the memory (RAM) to heal itself it makes RAM contiguous, leading to better performance. Point (don't repent later, do something in prep) was lost on you (& most) I imagine ... and, I will say the issues you mentioned were the most plausible examples of what this thread was intended for. The 'I can't get Cortana's' in Bengladesh (or somewhere Cortana has NOT been deployed) just drive me batty !

If people want help, they need to provide enough info to make an informed guess to rectify their problem. How many people have their passport info filled out on this forum. That would be valuable info (it's only a one time thing) towards troubleshooting. Where you are, what device(s), etc.

... and it appears, YOU stopped reading my post after whiners. There was a bit more substance.

Read the post, right after you called me out ...
