I have a surface rt with type cover and plan on selling the rt but was hoping to use the type cover on the 3. I haven't seen any info about this so far and while I doubt it will work, I am still hopeful. Any info would help before I put my surface up for sale.

My original touchcover for Surface RT works like a charm. There is no reason why the typecover won't work. Although the size does not match and you won't be able to put your surface to sleep mode when you close the cover.

I read a review that stated that the original Type covers do work but are a little bit wider than the Surface 3. So if you don't mind the extra border on the sides you may want to keep it. Or, you can order from Amazon or COSTCO who offer bundles that include the Type cover and pen for the same price as the Surface3 alone! Got mine yesterday from COSTCO. I had ordered it in April when on pre-order.

The type cover will work, all the (Surface) type covers are compatible with each model, well so far anyway. Before I got enough money to get the keyboard for my Pro 3 I used my old 1st gen type cover from my Surface RT, and it worked fine. The only problem you'll have is the keyboard could look a little odd as the pre-Surface pro 3 models had an aspect ration of 16:9, to accommodate for the 3:2 ratio on the Surface 3 the tablets been decreased in width, thus the keyboard could appear longer than the tablet itself (you may need to ask other people about this as I don't have the Surface 3)

Hope this helps!

I'm using my Surface 3 with the old RT touch cover. It works great. I actually like this cover better than the current type cover since I mainly use this as a tablet. I wish Microsoft would make a new touch cover that fits the Surface 3.

Can't agree more.
