Precautions before updating to amber?

I have a Lumia 620, but my cousin has a 920. I updated to amber months ago, but didn't have a SIM card in. My cousin recently got a SIM card, but she still didn't update. She doesn't want a bricked phone so doesn't want the update.

So any precautions? Does removing the SIM card before updating guarantee an easy update...or there is more?
