Well, I'd have to say that after extensive testing of several apps in several ways that yes, there is an improvement. But whatsapp does still do the resuming and crash thing. Just not as often. But there is a marked improvement in the operation of the phone and I didn't even do a hard reset.
I'm not understanding the Cyan/Denim vs 8.1.1/8.1.2 thing. What exactly is Cyan/Denim and the different versions and how do I notice each?
Happy to hear that!

Yes, Whatsapp is slow and problematic and battery draining. This is because it's still an "old" Silverlight app and isn't being optimized for the new WinRT APIs. Until they change the way it's written it will keep having annoying load/resume screens. I'm glad 8.1.2 fixed your issues.
Black/Cyan/Denim, etc. are firmwares... which are mostly just responsible for interacting with the phone hardware (think of them like drivers on PC), and so they vary with devices. 8.1.1 etc are OS updates which bring the same features for all phone. They are kind of independent but not really completely independent.
Your phone says Cyan because of two reasons, and here's why you shouldn't be concerned: 1) there is a well-known bug in Extras+Info app that reads the firmware incorrectly for old phones and 2) it kind of doesn't matter because Denim hasn't brought the same changes to 925 as it did with the 930/1520, etc.
So basically, unless we have a phone that takes explicit advantage of the new drivers and features unlocked by Denim, it doesn't matter what the actual firmware is or what the phone reads it as. OS updates are most important at this time, and if 8.1.2 works better than the previous, stick with it
