I see this description (prototype 830) used alot in the sales forum to describe a Lumia 830. What's the difference between this and a regular att 830?

Prototype is RM-985 with an older firmware: Debian Red. It comes with qi cover instead of PMA, has no at&t branding in the back, unlocked device. This variant is sold in Canada.

Not true. I have an RM-985 sold by telus ( Rogers too) -it's unlocked has no branding whatsoever, has Denim and the most current OS and every thing on this Authorized RM-985 works as on a RM-984 or RM- 983 (ATT) it has 000-CA ( Canadian) as Mobile Operator. The Prototype is indeed an RM-985 it came with Debian Red, the code name for Denim and among things I found out that didn't work or were completely missing was Glance. Yes RM-985's use Qi Wireless but that makes it easier for those of us who have had a Lumia with wireless and already have the charging pad. PMA isn't any better than Qi.
The RM-985 Prototypes were the sold on eBay not in Canada by Canadian carriers.
BTW the RM-985 is sold in South America, first in Brazil and that RM-985 is an authorized release just like the RM-985 sold by Canadian telecommunication operators.

My AT&T 830 works great on my Qi charging pads. I think the AT&T model actually works with both Qi and PMA.

So it would have all the same features as a regular 830 then?

Are you talking about the Authorized RM-985 or the prototype RM-985 ?
I described both to the best of my knowledge above other than the two
differences I mentioned, you'll have to do some research for all the issues I've heard
about the prototype. A prototype is never the same as a final factory authorized release. The authorized has issues as you have probably read in this 830 forum. I can only repeat what I mentioned above. I can tell you that I didn't buy a prototype that was being sold on eBay in September -October because I did not like what I read about the "issues" with the prototype, so I waited. I was lucky and found a brand new unlocked un branded ( no carrier logo etc) factory authorized RM-985 for $340. which is less than the prototypes sold on eBay. To get the dirt on the prototype I can only suggest what I did and that was to read everything on WC about the 830 prototype and to cull the internet. For me I opted for the authorized. I suggest that you re-read my post and see what I said I knew and what I didn't know about the prototype. Good luck.
