Query about the AT&T Lumia 830

Their unlock page says 60 days of service so now I am confused. If they unlock it immediately it would be great.

Reason for the AT&T version was the free fitbit, two shells supporting both charging standards and the gunmetal finish.

It's not 60-days of service on that phone, it's 60 days of service total. Say you've been on AT&T for a year with a different phone then you buy the 830 at full price, the 830 can be unlocked immediately.

You might have to fax or email them the receipt.. I got an IMEI error with the online tool and called customer support. They opened a ticket and had me fax in the receipt.. Worked fine..

For me, for three phones from them over the last 3 1/2 years now, that is/was not the case.
Even calling CS I got the same story, 60 days of service on the PHONE not 60 days of service with AT&T.
I've never had one unlocked by them, I've always ended up paying $20.00 or so and going to a third party unlocking service.
I travel to Asia a lot and it seems I always get a new phone shortly before I go and can't wait the 60 days :P

There is a lot of mis information in this thread...

Carriers are required by law to unlock a phone that you own.

Per the FCC:
  • Somewhere on their respective websites, carriers have to post an unlocking policy.
  • Postpaid unlocking (eg, on a contract or device repayment plan) must be allowed if the contract period is over, an ETF has been paid, or device repayment completed.
  • Carriers have 48 hours to unlock your phone after you request it be unlocked, unless they need more time.
  • If you're deployed military personnel, you can unlock your phone at any time.
I've said it twice already but I've done this three time now already this year. Once on an iPhone, once on a Note 4 and just yesterday on the Lumia 830. I've had ZERO issues and the unlocking instructions / codes were sent to my email within 24 hours of my request.

You must have an AT&T account. That account has to have been active for a least 60-days and you must pay full / non contract price for the phone. You don't need to have had the specific phone for 60-days, just the account.

If you are being told otherwise (I never had to answer any questions when I've called) then simply explain the rules to them. My phone calls have been like this.

Me: I want to unlock this phone. I paid full retail price.
ATT: What's the IMEI of the device
Me: Gives it
ATT: Can you fax or email the receipt?
Me: Sure
ATT: Email the receipt to this address and use this case # in the Subject line
Me: Thanks

I send the email or the fax and the next day I have the unlocking code / instructions.

When I faxed them the receipt for my Note 4 is was not even purchased at ATT. It was an ATT branded phone that was purchased at Sams Club. The receipt clearly showed a purchase date that was 2 days prior to the unlock request..

Please post the FCC "source" that's quoted here.

Thanks,
Fred

AT&T unlocks it AFTER you by it at FULL retail price.. Takes about a day to get the unlocking instructions / code
Yes AT&T unlocks it after you buy it at full retail price...but the following conditions have to be satisfied (or at least that's what the T&C says)

1) The person requesting the unlock has to be a postpaid customer for at least 60 days or longer or prepaid customer for at least 6 months

2) For non-customers it may not work since every unlock request has to be associated with a valid AT&T phone/account number

Also as per the FCC source link you posted above:

Q: Will My Postpaid Phone Be Unlocked on Request?
Once the new standards are fully implemented: Yes, provided the terms and conditions of your service contract are met and you are in good standing. You should speak with your service provider to understand the terms and conditions of your agreement and the provider's policies on unlocking mobile devices.

Yup... AT&T will unlock 5 devices per year and per account.. Counting the 830 I just did, I've used 3 this year.. All have went down without a hitch..

Good for you! I am waiting for the prices to go down or the FitBit combo to get done so I can walk into an AT&T store with a friend of mine (he's an AT&T customer) and buy the phone outright and he can request the unlock for me. I am on Cricket Wireless so I don't won't have any issue in using a AT&T locked phone, its just that I liked my phones to be unlocked...gives me the freedom to move around at will :)

Let me know once you receive your unlock code. Just want to make sure AT&T has the codes available before I buy the phone.
