Don't get me wrong, I love WP7. The level of integration is astounding. The os is very unifying which makes it feel quite advanced and well thought-out, while android feels very disjointed, it's a bunch of apps with very little integration. However, WP7 is missing a LOT! To deny this is to remain stagnant. MS must work on multiple fronts to get WP7 to more people including acknowledging its shortcomings; while at the same time being innovative to set itself apart. I really hope MS didn't get into the game too late and that they're able to catch up. I loved webOS (another well-unified user experience) and put too much hope into a sinking ship. I don't want to do that again. Here's my list of shortcomings I can think of when comparing my HD7 to the latest Android Super Phones.
OS
- Support for more kinds of hardware (for examples, see below)
- Support for different res screens (e.g. HTC Amaze sports a 19:6 aspect ratio screen)
- A notifications list (Perhaps swipe right, from the tiles screen?)
- Custom Tile Colors (there's already too little customization with Metro, they need to open this up)
- Full Preemptive Multi Processing (webOS did it... would love to see it on a platform again)
- An alternate launcher UI. Metro's great but people **LOVE** to customize their phones.
Metro just leaves so little room for much variation; it's a major down-side and.
- How about an option for smaller tiles? (e.g. 3 tiles per row)
- Continue to improve TellMe -- it's got to keep up with (or even pass) Siri -- love what it does so far.
- Allow some customization options of TellMe's Text-to-speech: Alternate voices (male voice, cartoon voices, ...?), talking speed, custom prompts and responses?
- Stronger Camera API support. Apps such as Key Ring should be able to work as well as they do on Android.
- Update Blutooth support to 3.0
- DLNA
- An option to disable TellMe from bleeping out explicit language such as in text messages. What's with that?
- A more active version of TellMe, the first time my phone moves in a given day, TellMe comes up and offers to read off my agenda, the weather forecast, headlines, etc.
- Ability to have any text (or text msg) and have it read aloud.
- Would love a resend option on the text msg context menu.
- Folders in the app list! Further, let these folders be live and pinned to the tile screen as new hubs. The alphabetical app list just doesn't work for me. (OK this could probably be done with an app)
- What's with the 20 person limit in groups under contacts? I wanted to make a group for my business associates and could only put a small number of them in there. Very Bad!
- Ability to install alternate keyboards (Swype?), or figure out a way to make the current keyboard more productive (predict the next word maybe?).
- OK The Zune software is nice and all, but give me USB drive as an alternative.
- ...and releated, give me the option to make my phone show as a wireless network disk on my home network so I can copy files over without USB cable.
Bundled Software
- Continue to develop Mobile Office to be at least on par with Android office apps.
- True turn-by-turn in Bing Maps.
- Week view in calendar
- Option to put my Agenda on the Lock screen.
3rd Party Software
- Pandora! Pandora! Pandora!
- Flash! Flash! Flash!
- Silverlight! Silverlight! Silverlight!
- Skype
- More Software...
Hardware
- Multi Core
- NFC
- Front-Facing Cameras
- 4G
- Ambiant sound active noise cancelation
- Gyro
- HDMI out
- micro SD card slots -- I need more music than I can put on my HD7.
I'm sure I'm only skimming the surface of what can be improved in future releases...
