Quick question

I just wanted to check on this even though I might already know the answer. If I install the developer preview for 8.1 today, I will be able to safely upgrade it to the official release later on and be able to keep all my data and info on my phone, right? I'm usually picky about keeping my OS's official on my devices, but I just can't wait for this one, so I wanted to make sure! Thanks all.

You are kinda right, you will keep all your stuff but you wont get a new update when it is officially released, because your phone already has the update then, when the official update gets released you will get the new Nokia firmware update and it will be exactly the same as a normal phone updated to WP8.1
