Rapid battery discharge after 8.1 update 1

A month after I upgraded my 1520 to Denim, my battery discharges RAPIDLY.

The rapid discharge is so ridiculous that a 2 hour commute playing music on my fully charged device will drain the battery down to the mid 60% range.

I'm aware that this could be a time to get a replacement battery but the timing seems rather peculiar.

Three to four hours of just playing music will drain the battery to the point of auto standby (shutdown).

The phone will now auto shutdown between 52% -46% battery life.

Before this problem started, the battery had to trickle down below 30% where it would auto shutdown after the critical battery notification somewhere around 9% battery life.

Then there's the overheating issue...

Any ideas?

My suggestion would be to use the Recovery Tool. However annoying that is, it's the best solution. Having had a L920 that would pretty much suffer after every update it was the simplest and easiest solution.

You simply have a corrupt update on your phone. That's pretty much it.

Up to you if you wish to proceed but I can guarantee that this is your issue.

You'll need a PC and internet connection.

One thing I have done a couple of times with my L920 is not to restore from backup either. Don't ask my why it worked better but it always did. Again, up to you how you want to handle things.

I just installed the apps I wanted manually after. There's a list in the Store of what you downloaded.

I often find that with this situation you have a combination of issues. A bad app. A bad update and some other anomalies. It's never one thing entirely.

A lot of people have the same problem after the Denim update, including myself. What you describe is exactly the same as what I am experiencing. A hard reset did not resolve the problem. It's probably a bug of some sort.

I had upgraded to windows 10 preview but there were too many bugs so I used the recovery tool and I'm back to Denim. I didn't restore apps from backup but set up the device as a new device.

The battery SEEMED to work fine but the problems are back again.

What's even more frustrating is that the phone shuts down around 50%-60% battery life. I'm totally aware that you can't trust battery status notifications but geez.

I have to wonder what they did with the denim update that exacerbates not only battery issues but digitizer issues. I think in the end maybe people skipping Denim if possible may be the best option. No, denim didn't break your battery and it was probably already on the downside turn. Maybe a Lithium Polymer battery expert could enlighten us on why changing power drain causes these failing batteries to fail faster.

I have a theory as to what happened...

...it must be the memory card. I have a 64GB microSD card that I took out to replace with another. Ended up discarding the other SD card and reverted to the 64GB card which was already close to capacity.

My problem is that I never formatted it to reuse it because the info is still on it. Xbox Music player won't recognize tracks on the card but 3rd party apps do. Pics are saved to the card when taken with the camera but don't show up in Photohub. They appear in Files however. Apps can be saved to the SD card and still run.

There is an intense heat emanating from the general area of the memory card so I want to assume that the phone is working over time to read material off of the SD card which rapidly burns battery life.

A hard reset and a new 128GB microSD card later... Still having rapid battery discharge. There's an app called Certificates which shows you the current state of all the certificates on your phone; mine is showing me quite a few "Expired or not yet valid" statuses.

Could those invalid certificates be a suspect?
