Restoring Whatsapp messages from a WP 8.1 (NL720) backup to Windows 10 Mobile (ML950), why am I unable to pull messages from previous versions backup?

Restoring Whatsapp messages from a WP 8.1 (NL720) backup to Windows 10 Mobile (ML950)

I'm trying to restore my whatsapp chats to my new Lumia 950. (Unsuccessfull)
Previously I was using Lumia 720 and have backed up the messages. Have copied this backup folder to the new phone. But it doesn't detect the same.
Can someone let me know why I'm not able to pull the messages from the previous version's backup?

As far as I know backups can only be done using the SD card.

Yup, I'm aware of that. But the question is, the app doesn't detect the backup.

Did you first inserted the sd card, then installed Whatsapp? So it can advice you Backup detected.
Better you first make a WA backup on old phone, then put that card on new phone and install WA.

I did it when switched from 520 to 650.

Try copying the folder structure to the phone storage of the 950 instead of the SD card.

It won't work on the phone memory.

Here's what to do:

Put the memory card back in your old phone and backup WhatsApp
Uninstall WhatsApp on your new phone
Put the memory card in your new phone
Install WhatsApp
Launch WhatsApp
It will detect the backup and prompt you to restore.

I've done this numerous times.

Put the memory card in your new phone
Install WhatsApp
Launch WhatsApp

Because my old phone ran WP8.1 and the new one runs W10.

No, when I upgraded my old 520 with same SD inside, new installed WA found and restored the backup
