RT for me

Well my birthday is ten days away and the wife insists on buying me a tech gift...i.e new notebook-phone-camera etc...
Made the decision to get a tablet which of course would be the original Surface 64 since I've wanted a Surface for a year.
I'm not the intense user that would make massive demands.

Hoping I won't be disappointed after reading a number of reviews that seem to tread on the early Surface tab.
Tabletwise I would be coming from a now defunct Asus TF700T that left me frowning quite a bit.

I'm thinking the lower resolution and Tegra 3 in the original Surface won't impact my personal needs.
Would the above be a true statement for the: web surfer, news reader, music player, video streamer, simple games player?
Just hoping for a nice reliable windows tablet that will travel well and not cause a lot of frowning.

Yes, it would suit you just fine. My wife does exactly what you are describing besides being a facebook junkie and she has no issues with her Surface RT. For my needs, I went with the Pro, however, since we bought a Surface 2, my Pro has become a paperweight and I'll be selling it shortly. So, both my wife and I are RT users and we have not found anything that we cannot do with our devices. If I was a heavy gamer or needed an x86 only program like AutoCad for my daily use, I would recommend the Pro. If you do not need something like that, get a Surface RT or Surface2, whichever your budget will allow, you will not be disappointed by either. There's a great set of videos on YouTube called 'Why I Love my SurfaceRT' by Sean Ong, check them out, they are well worth the watch.

I looked at Sean Ong's vids and checked Lisa Gades review also.
Happy to see positives about the older Surface.

I was thinking about getting extended coverage from MS also.
I usually don't, lately I've had some poor luck with expensive electronic items.

The wife ordered directly from MS so I should be clutching it soon.
Grinning already!!

No problem, we went with MS Complete as well.....of course we have a 3yr old and a 1yr old.....have to pb&j proof the open ports

I got a Black Friday Surface RT and it is just fantastic. I am not a great typist so I find the touch cover just fine. I have surprised myself with how much I am using office. The neat things are remote desktop and file sharing with my PC. I can access any file as long as I have wifi. Photos movies and books from PC to RT and you are not using any memory. I installed a 32 gig micro sd card and have not used it.

I have decided to build a NAS so I can properly store, backup and share all of my files. I have all the parts laying around except for a couple of big HDDs. The Surface RT really got a bad rap from all the MS haters out there because it really is the most versatile tablet out there except for a straight Win 8 tablet.

According to Microsoft the casing is created by molding metal and depositing particles that creates a finish similar to a luxury watch. Using magnesium, parts can be molded as thin as .65mm. Much thinner than your typical credit card but lighter and stronger. The end result is a 10.6" tablet that weighs in at 32 ounces.

The Surface Pro is 32 oz. The Surface RT is a touch over 1.5 pounds or 24 oz
