S4 only might be a mistake...

Coming back to the S4, it should be possible to have Nvidia design a WP8 compatible SOC. Also Huawei could do such a chip. I am starting to think that the whole WP project is a ship with no one at the helm.

It is up to Microsoft to add the Software support. You'll notice that Qualcomm was the launch partner, which doesn't rule out them allowing other SoC in the future.

ST-Ericsson - NOKIA SELECTS ST-ERICSSON AS SUPPLIER FOR FUTURE WINDOWS PHONE DEVICES
NVIDIA - Nvidia Going 'Grey' for Windows Phone?

Wouldn't be surprised if we saw support for different chipsets for either WP8.5 or in the Spring update. Consider that Windows RT (same kernel as WP8) already supports NVIDIA's Tegra 3 and TI's OMAP.

I think we'll see some more diversity there eventually, but Microsoft is trying to maintain some standards and avoid the multiple levels of fragmentation you see on Android, I.e. games that require Tegra for one example. As for Huawei, I couldn't care less if we get any of that substandard Chinese crap. They have to draw the line somewhere.

There is no evidence that this is ACTUALLY the strategy, in fact there is more evidence to say it is not.

Elop originally claimed that was their strategy.

Listen to some of the most recent interviews with Elop, he is clearly frustrated with supply issues.

If that's the case, I hope the media call him out on his original "we constrained supply as part of a strategy to build buzz" comment. I distinctly remember that statement in a media interview.

I agree. That's why I got the quality Taiwanese 8X built by union employees who are well-paid to replace my faulty Chinese-manufactured Lumia 920 ;)
