Screen stays on during speaker calls ?

Hey all.
Just wondering if this is a bug or a feature ...

I was using my phone for an hour long conference call, so naturally I set it to speaker, and put it aside. I noticed that the screen didn't turn off.
I figured it was a proximity thing, so I flipped the phone ever, but still, the screen stayed on.

This won't bode well for battery life, so was wondering if this is a bug or feature ?

I would guess it is a feature, but I'm not sure

When on speaker, just push power button and the screen will stay off during the call.
