Screen turns on when notifications appear

Is there any way to turn off the feature where the lock screen will turn on to show a notification that has been received? i get 100's of messages a day and its really eating up my battery, I'm thinking this is the cause..

If you don't really want to see notifications anyway, then leave your phone upside down. The screen won't wake up due to proximity sensor when notifications arrive.

nope no option! privacy lock screen lights up and flash who txt are from and a portion of the message. shouldn't talk about this concern here though lol

Hey

I understood that one can't turn off this behaviour, but is there a way to control which apps are allowed to turn the screen on, especially for third party apps? If that's not possible it means that, theoretically, every app that gets updates like twitter, facebook or skype could turn on the screen?
Notifications with turned on screen for calls or sms are not the problem, but hundreds of wa messages in group chats a day make that feature really really annoying.
