Seems MS has forgotten to flip the switch for Lumia devices without denim??

Country Variant basically means it is not reliant on a carrier so any updates should in theory come direct from Microsoft.

I myself have a UK CV Lumia 930 but I'm on the EE network. I know that EE have not yet released Denim for the 930 so to me this assumes that I will still have to wait on the carrier I am using instead of Microsoft.

Whatever happened to "SIM-free"? Thank you for taking the time to explain in a civil manner. I'm not a high ranking member of a telecom so this is also a theory. My guess is that whatever country you're in, there are carriers that provide service for the region. Before an update is released for devices in that region, Microsoft has to clear it with the service providers for said region. In other words, unless you have your own towers, you have to wait. As Charles Darwin famously wrote, "I think".

'Clue, you usually display an enormous amount of wisdom and common sense, but I think you're missing something here. The CV versions of Lumia are essentially unbranded unlocked devices, similar to an unlocked iPhone or Google's Nexus line. The original question to your statement of the carriers holding up the updates meant, "If the carriers are holding up Denim's release, then why aren't the CV* devices getting it either?"

*CV= unlocked, unbranded, un-anything to do with carriers

Am I misreading you? Maybe I'm the one that's confused!

Nope that's how I read it. CV or sim free devices SHOULD, you would think receive it first due to not going through the carriers and their many hold ups.
But I am still waiting with an unlocked 930 in the UK myself.
To my surprise my wife's 720 locked to O2 got the update yesterday.

Also of point iphone owners don't have this problem regardless of if they own an unlocked or locked device as the update comes directly from Apple. Everyone gets it at the same time.

Technically the updates go through the carriers, but Apple gives them a strict deadline of when to have the update approved & ready. But yes, I believe that the update does come from Apple, after carrier approval. And I wouldn't doubt that technically an iPhone for say Verizon gets slightly different firmware than AT&T's iPhone.

Two reasons for expressing displeasure ( call it complaining if you must, even whining if that's how your thoughts work);
1.) When a company, any company, announces a release of anything within a time bracket it should release within that time bracket or give a good reason why not
2.) A cynical suspicion that Microsoft would rather try to sell new devices than support existing ones - so is in no hurry to send the upgrade out.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself correctly. Imagine if MS released an update for say, Germany, and the carriers in Germany told their users "Your device contains features that interfere with our network. We're sorry, you can't use it here".

I understand the notion that factory unlocked devices should get updates first. But even here in the US, devices need to get FCC certification before they can be legally sold and operated. I've read about devices like the 532 passing certification in other countries so I'm assuming they have similar regulation. As I wrote to the other poster, I don't know how other countries operate but I'm quite sure that telecom operators have the final say in what goes on their networks regardless of what the manufacturer tells its customers. "Subject to carrier approval" does not just mean branded phones.

Did I explain myself better or did I just muddy the waters more. My brain and my keyboard are sometimes on non-speaking terms.
