setting symbol then a sad face and turns off

I bought my son a windows Lumia 550 in February 2016, everything was fine until last night he said his phone kept saying update so he tried to update and since then its showing a big and small settings symbol and a loading bar underneath, then turns to a sad face and turns the phone off. I've tried resetting his phone by pressing the power button and volume at the same time, but nothing changes, still shows the same thing and turns off.

Hi, you will need to reset the phone using the 'Windows Device Recovery Tool' from a pc/laptop.

This seems to be the same problem I'm having (http://forums.windowscentral.com/ask-question/424163-unrecoverable-phone.html), sadly, the WDRT isn't working for me. I hope it will for you.
