Setting up Google account asks for permission?

Prior to updating to Windows 8.1 on my Lumia 925 I had a linked inbox with my gmail/personal email/live email synched into my email app no problem.

After updating to 8.1 and adding my Google account, under Email+Account it says my gmail account requires attention. After clicking on the account a pop up comes up saying

"Google

To continue using Google on your phone, you'll need to give Windows Phone permission to access your account"

If I hit "connect" im brought to gmail on the IE app and asked to login. Then I'm asked to give WP permission to essentially do anything it wants with my Gmail account.

I don't recall ever having to do this when I set up email before 8.1 Any idea what this is or if I'm doing something wrong?

That's how it does it in 8.1 from what I understand.
That's certainly the behavior I got with my account.

Some kid eating cheetos decided it this way. I use my phone for Google Mail only and it doesn't even take my password
