It seems it would be better used if I left it on say overnight next to my bed. Is there any reason to turn off the surface go when not using it?

no, there's no need with sleep mode and if you want you can leave it plugged in next to your bed... takes less time to open from sleep than shut off...

I'd just be sure to restart it every so often to keep quirks to a minimum.

As someone who used to develop software for Windows 1 and DR GEM (imagine an application that took 4 hours to compile), these sorts of comments makes me laugh, "it takes less time to open from sleep than shut off", lol, are a few seconds that big an issue in your life? I reckon mine takes about 5-10s longer to boot than to come back from sleep. But I have definitely noticed a battery drain when left in standby, none when turned off.

Id say do whatever you want, if you're stressing over a few seconds, change you life, don't worry about boot times

In a general sense, problems tend to occur with PCs on boot. But, with mobile devices having boot times that are fairly quick....I don't think either way will make much of a difference.

I mean obviously there are benefits to leaving it in sleep mode versus powering it off every time otherwise why would it exist? I only asked because I am using it as a secondary device and prefer to leave it on. I understand this is not an ARM device but it is compared to an ipad and that is the target competition so I was wondering what experiences people had so far.

I just turn it off when I know I'm not going to be using it for a few hours. Windows has enough problems waking up from sleep so I'd rather just avoid the sleep function.

what are you talking about willis? when asleep its instant on, when OFF, depending on the device its longer than a few seconds to turn on... big difference. if its no big deal TO YOU, then fine, carry on with your life

never had problems with waking my 4 devices... maybe you have a bug?

I always use hibernate with windows, especially if you have a SSD it is almost instantly on but you don't lose power over time (or very little) and devices cannot turn themselves on (which can prevent bugs with the devices not turning off again after having turned itself on) or suddenly making noise when you want to sleep.
The only thing I noticed that having "Turn on fast startup" on (at default it is on) can let devices get stuck/freeze when they going into sleep or hibernate mode, so I always turn that off (perhaps that bug is fixed on newer devices though).

Generally I've left it in sleep mode. It shuts itself off if I leave it asleep for too long I suppose

Sleep turning into hibernation has been a problem for Windows 10 for quite sometime. Any down time expected to last longer than a couple of hours becomes a shutdown for me. Surface 3 was the worst offender in spite of the "workaround" that was available.

I have to disagree, I have the surface 3 and it goes into hibernation all the time and it wakes up no problems for me... again tho, each mileage might vary tho.. reminds me I have to set my S3 to stop going into hibernation, takes a little longer to open... hate it lol perhaps the earlier win10 had that trouble.. as of now and for ME, it works just fine.

Please enlighten us to what these seconds in your life give you :amaze: ? My surface Go boots from cold around 10x faster than it takes to boil a single cup of water, that's more boots than I'll do most days. Or put it into a different context, the cost is about the same as driving around 150' at 40mph. Usain Bolt couldn't even run the 50m in the extra boot time.

I just think modern life is all about rushing, if people worry about seconds, unless you're a pro athlete, then perhaps you need to reflect on what you're doing. Possibly because I started programming in the early days and floppy disks were a huge advance over tape and cassette tape, and those themselves were a huge advance over cards.

Ah, yes, someone with similar experience to mine :). I never used cassette tape or 8” floppies, but did use cards, 9-track tapes, line editors, 5.25” floppies (90K ones, when maximum RAM was 64K).

Modern technology is grand!

perhaps for YOU, you're willing to wait till your tablet turns on for how many minutes or seconds, but when someone is at work and needs access to their files in a pinch or needs to check some fact findings on the web for work or WHATEVER reasons they may be at home, that extra few minutes it takes to boot up from a shutdown as apposed to sleep makes a difference and I, and possibly many others don't wanna wait for whatever reasons... maybe you see something on tv and need to check something on the web and need it in a pinch, who wants to wait? but let me ask you this, why would that Bother YOU, for what reasons we need the device to turn on in an instance?... I mean thats why tech companies has made these devices to be able to turn on instantly... seriously who wants to wait? and why are you so bothered by that? LOL

I agreed that switching on the surface takes longer time compared to the instant on feature on ipad or android tablet. But you are being exaggerate over the time taken to switch on the surface, it takes less than 10 seconds for my surface go to turn on (from a power off state), not even a minute. Do you actually own a surface device?

Bear in mind that microsoft surface is a tablet COMPUTER running on FULL OS, not a mobile OS with limited features loaded on ipad or android tablets, so it actually makes sense that microsoft surface takes slightly longer time to boot and turn on.

I find it funny that most people who complaining about any tech devices (tablet, computers, phones etc.) are normally those people who never own or use the devices, and yet they make so much (false) complaints as if they actually own the devices.

I switch mine off when I'm not going to be using it for a few hours. I'd rather wait a few extra seconds while booting up than have to deal with low charge later in the day.
