So I walked downstairs to leave work today, and a friend of mine was working the security desk. He asked me about the Lumia 920 (since he saw I pre-ordered it yesterday). So we got to talking a while, and eventually we were comparing features, we decide to test Siri vs. Tell Me.

Well, I got my first hands-on experience with Siri (using his iPhone 4S with iOS 6). I swear to God this is how it happened...

Siri-Chime
Aaron: What's the weather like outside? (Because this is EXACTLY what the commercial says you can do.)
Siri: Calling Devon S.
I press Cancel.
Siri-Chime
Aaron: Find Youngstown Weather
Siri: Aaron H. has multiple numbers to call. Which number?
Aaron: Go **** yourself, then tell me the weather!
Siri: I didn't catch that.
I press Cancel.
Siri-Chime
Aaron: Text Aaron Hall
Siri: I don't know anyone by that name.
I give up and press Cancel.

I pickup my phone and try again with Microsoft Tell Me...

Tell Me Chime
Aaron: Find Youngstown Weather
Tell Me: Searching for Youngstown Weather .... Flips into Bing and displays the weather forecast for Youngstown, Ohio.
Tell Me Chime
Aaron: Text Ben Kerns
Tell Me: Texting Benjamin Kerns .... Nice touch recognizing the full name.
Tell Me: Say Your Message...
Aaron: Hi Ben. How's it going?
Tell Me: Hi Ben how's it going? .... I give it partial credit for verbal accuracy but points off for lacking proper grammar structure.
Tell Me: You can say 'send it' or 'try again'.
Aaron: Send
Tell Me Chime Confirms and goes away.

I guess THAT is why I never really see people using Siri.

Yeah, one day I was talking to my parents and we watching TV and the Siri commercials came on and I laughed and said my Windows Phone can do that stuff. My dad didn't believe me so I re-created almost the exact commercial for him with my phone. He was impressed, all he had heard was the media hype of how great Siri and Apple are. Didn't realize mine was as good.

I mean, the funny part is that I've been making fun of Siri since it came out saying it was a gimmick because who wants to have such an inappropriate relationship with their phone as how John Malkovich has with his, and I'm pretty most cabbies and chauffeurs would have kicked Marty out of the car for being such a tool.

But I never actually used it, so it didn't even occur to me that it was really THAT bad. I spoke clearly, loudly, don't have any accents, and it really didn't "get it." I was kinda surprised, to be honest. I think I was just hoping they had one feature that, as they say-- "just works."

But it seems to me it's yet another in a long list of things that don't really work or works half-assed that people just forgive because it's Apple.

Yeah, Siri really isn't anything special... other than she'll talk back to you if you ask her something stupid...but when it comes to getting the job done TellMe has it in the bag.
I'm surprised windows doesn't advertise it more.

My only gripe with TellMe is allegedly fixed in WP8... deeper integration with the OS and applications. I can't think of how many times it would have been nice to have it read/post stuff in People hub or read e-mails or do stuff in apps.

It has the potential to make Siri look like a Speak-N-Spell.

I played with it on my ex-girlfriends iPhone and it was horrible. She loved my Windows phone and the way that Tell Me worked so much smoother.
