Skype on Windows 8

Does it run in background for you by any chance? It asked me when I first accessed it. I said yes, let it run in background. In settings it shows that it is running in background. But when I opened it the second time, it made that login sound, and logged in. I asked someone to give me a call at random time on Skype to see if that works and they saw me offline all day. I am constantly connected to power and WiFi so internet isn't an issue.
