So what would you like to see in Surface Pro 5?

14 inch, battery life, and thinner bezel than SP4. AND LASTLY, smaller USB to make this tablet thinner. Basically just use an adapter.

Depends on which "week 1"

Week 1 from release, would be a bit optimistic.
Week 1 of ownership, could very well be the norm, at some later point in the lifecycle.

My personal SP4 is 1 week old today. No BSOD, and nothing "laggy" about it.
Did have a few Intel Vid-driver crashes before the updates and a settings change fixed it.

1) Pen tilt
2) USB C
3) 13-14" Screen
4) dGPU whether it's an external or internal.
5) Quad core if possible.

Most of these I think I would see in the Book 2, but that would only mean that I would upgrade.

I don't know with the battery thing, full video playback gives me 4.5 hrs, audio plus edge and some document editing gives me 7hrs or so. And just browsing has given me about 7.5 hrs. I don't mind this stats, and whether these are good or not, certainly u cant expect 8 hr for everything you do. Besides coming from a laptop which lasted 2 hrs at most, so good enough.

One simple feature, present on many computers and tablets from other companies, is for some reason absent on SP4: charge indicator.
I want to know when the battery is fully charged without turning the tablet on.

In order of importance:
1: Large display, or, even better, virtual side bezels (upper and lower bezel would stay, side bezels would only appear in tablet mode; when attached to the keyboard, they would make the screen 16:9, so larger and no more bars in videos, best of both worlds)
2. Core M with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD and option for core M7 (current Skylake core M7 has the same power as the i5 in SP3). Like HP and Lenovo are already doing....
3: Second USB type C (3.1 second gen), in addition to the current 3.0
4: LTE option
5: power type cover
6: bigger battery

What I wouldn't like:
1. stop trying to make it thinner and reduce battery size, it's thin enough (lighter ok if possible but without compromising battery)
2. stop increasing the resolution, it's more than sharp enough and this creates issues with battery like and scaling.

What I would like but it's not gonna happen:
silo for a small but not too short second pen (like the amazing toshiba Z20t-B-10C)

1. ALL fanless ALL Core M
2. Industry leading battery life (True 12 hour)
3. Longer cord
4 .Keyboard included in price or at least discounted when bought together.

I had the chance to test out a SP4 for a week. For now I am keeping my MBP that isn't even two years old. I'm just having a hard time justifying dropping $1,000+ on another computer in less than 2 years.

While my experience with the SP4 is a limited there are some things I would like to see.

I'd love to see even better performance in a fanless device but I think that depends more on Intel than Microsoft. There are things that can be improved with Windows 10 but I will leave those out except to say I hope Microsoft continues to optimize the touch experience on Windows 10.

- More Keyboard Options - I think it would be nice if Microsoft came out with a more traditional keyboard cover option for the Surface Pro...something more in line with what they offer on the Surface Book. Something that offers an improve trackpad, additional battery, and a more traditional laptop experience. I do like the Type Cover but I think it would be nice if Microsoft offered additional choices for that accessory.

- USB Type C - it is clearly the future.

- Keep the same width/height as the SP3/SP4 - I think they might be able to increase the screen size from 12.3 to 12.5 but I hope that Microsoft keep this form factor as an option. I think the size is a good mix between what people think of as a traditional tablet and laptop. I don't think I would like a 13-14 inch display on this device because I think it would be too big for me to use as a tablet.

- Make it thiner/lighter - It is already a pretty thin/light but I think it could stand to go in this direction a little more. Though the potential trade off here is the battery life.

I don't think Microsoft needs to make revolutionary changes to the next generation of this device. The best changes will come with Windows 10 updates, IMHO. The biggest changes for the hardware of this device will come from Intel developing new chips.

GPS,
LTE with HSDPA+ Band 4 support (T-Mobile in US, Wind in Canada).
Pen Tilt and pressure sensitive eraser.
USB 3.1 with Type C connectors TWO of them.
Intel RealSense front and back (or at least front).

Merge the two halves of the dock into one brick and make it a bit lighter please. Kind of a sucky travel dock the way it is now.

I'd vote for:
1. Longer battery life (12 hours if possible but could do with a true 8-10 hours).
2. Separate the design for core M and i5/i7 and make core M fully customizable (to be able to chose the ram and the SSD size). What I mean is make the core M without the holes for venting since there's no vent and add more battery in the empty space of the fan. Ok this might lead to an apple like Pro and Pro Plus offering which might confuse people but it makes more sense.
3. New USB along side the old USB port.
4. No rushing in releasing the tablet ending up with broken drivers and software! OK, by the time the SP5 comes out the windows 10 should be mature enough to behave as the 8.1 did.

Edit:
5. Edge sensing technology so that when you hold the tablet in portrait mode to write (or read) it doesn't register the touch on the edges where is being held (since the edges are already kind of thin).

For me:
  • Larger display, without making the actual device any larger
  • Fanless i5 / i7
  • larger battery while keeping the same sleek design, which is totally possible if they get rid of the fans! :)
  • thicker glass for the touch screen so it doesn't wobble or flex while using the pen

If they make these things, WOW! Greatest device EVER!

They MUST keep though the SD card expansion and the hinge mechanism, if they ditch those (like an iPad) I would NOT be using it.

Um ok obviously you have not tried one..very fast adapter max speed approaches 960 Mbps.

Gross as in ugly. Who wants adapters hanging off such a beautiful device. And having to carry it around with me kinda defeats the purpose of portability.

its a fact of life on ultra-thin devices...dongles are here to stay...get with the times. Or don't.

Dongles ..You use them when you need , have them in the small lightweight microfiber lined bag (with storage pouch ) when not using and put your SP away each time in the same bag, no loss of "portability". My dongles (USB3 4 port, 1GB Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, Surface Pen, BT Mouse and male to male HDMI extension as the dongle is female) may be attached about 35% of the time...65% I'm dongle-less/penless.I use the mouse 99% of the time.

Your solution is to make it thicker with a gaping hole in the side...not really the future and seems like a laptop or no-surface may be a better choice if you are anti-dongle. They are never going to put tons of ports on the Surface so most people will carry at least one dongle..you carry one you carry them all. Not that hard to see that is the way this goes..so deal with it.

I have to call your Ethernet suggestion as not a good idea..and this is coming from someone who had Ethernet on his Vaio and used it a lot . Its about trrade-offs in the end and accepting change.

I think Microsoft should come out with three separately designed lines of Surface tablets targeting different use scenarios, each allowing for RAM and drive configuration:

1. Entry level line based on Intel Atom: basic tablet for browsing and reading, etc.
2. Mass-market line based on Core M with fanless design: adequate for most users replacing a laptop
3. High-level line for users with demanding needs.
