I was reading about Narrator
Use Narrator on my Windows Phone | Windows Phone How-to (United States)
when I came across this little tidbit - may explain some blank screen issues when resetting your phone.
'If you don't let go of the Volume Down and Power buttons right after the vibration at 10?15 seconds, your phone may show a black screen and not restart normally. If this happens, just repeat the button combo to try again.'
An alternate method is - Hold Power button for 10-15 seconds until the phone vibrates.
