Storage details - other category

I believe that the other storage issue ifix is coming in the upcoming CDR2 which could be in the next couple of weeks.

because it doesnt remove anything. i tryed also some 3rd party software from store and nothing removes it. it's application data and it cannnot be removed

****! i have 620 with only 8gb of storage and i dont want to hard reset it. i have too much stuff on it and it would take me an age to install everything back
Hard reset is a perfect thing to do reclaim the storage, but that's the problem with everyone.

I didn't want to do a hard reset either( at first I wanted to wait for an update but after a while I just couldn't take it anymore), and I had way more apps installed than you with your 8 gb phone ( no offense but I had to reinstall and reorganize way more than you have to)

i wont hard reset. i hope for fix, or ill just have to live with it

It is a bummer. I have done a hard reset 3 times now. My other has stayed at 4.35 GB for about three months now, so I am not doing it agian untill I have to. A hard reset isn't all that bad. Game saves are the biggest let down though.

realy? what about installing back all 50 or more applications?

Just got to Settings < Backup and backup your app list+settings. Also make sure your tex messages are backed up. If you don't already, backup your photos/videos too. I do this automatically with SkyDrive. You will have to put your music back on yourself. Unless it is cloud based.

When you do a hard reset you should have the option to restore from backup. All of your apps are redownloaded (note: a very few amount were released for WP8 then pulled. If you have those installed currently, they will not be reinstalled. This was about a month into when WP8 was released. One example is iHeart Radio). You do have to setup your start screen again and you have to setup third party apps again...I beleive. All of your phones settings though are put back the way they were.

If you chose not to restore from backup, then you start completly over from scratch. I have done this too, and its not so bad. For your apps, you can login to www.windowsphone.com and go to your purchase history. You can then reinstall your apps by sending them to your phone. Or you can search for them from the store app, but the website is faster.

plus if you do a hard reset, the Other will simply fill up again, so you really gain nothing in the end

Do note that for the backup to occur, your mobile data needs to be activated. It wont check with WiFi :@

We had over 9 GB in other on one of our phones. After a hard reset 5 or so months ago it has under 2 GB there now. It may come back but for us it takes a long time.

Here is what I did to help alleviate and free up some space...

  • Download and Remove all pics from phone.
  • Sign out of SkyDrive App from phone.
  • Create new oulook.com account and do not store anything in it.
  • Sign into SkyDrive using newly created account from phone.
  • Go to your Photos and then Albums (give will sync up with your new) SkyDrive Picture apps which will be empty.
  • (May or May Not Be Needed) If your Facebook.com account has a lot of pictures you might want to either sign out of Facebook app completely or remove pics.
  • Pray MS gets their 5h!t together and fixes it....

The above process helped clean up close to 60% of my others folder....

Looks to me that aside from that, unofficially confirmed to exist, issue with Camera Roll app, the main cause of Other to grow is the following factors:
  • How often you install/remove apps
  • How often you update apps
  • How often you add/remove new music
If you rarely do that, most likely you won't hit the problem.

For the time being, my only suggestion to avoid Other category bloating the space is to avoid updating apps or do that less frequently. It also seems to be quite reasonable to keep away from testing apps on your phone. So, make sure you install only what you need. Ah, I guess ya'll know the tune... The less you install on Windows, the less bloated it gets with time. Keep your app list clean and narrowed down to your must have apps, at hopingly the OS will run smooth.

Also, if you add/remove music frequently, it seems to affect Other as well. Might be covers used for background imaging are kept intact with removal of songs.

More to that, if your Other has grown flat out big, consider re-installing apps without re-setting phone device. Just do that:
1. Tap apps and remove them
2. Go to windowsphone.com and download the new XAPs from there.
3. [optional] Copy XAPs to your storage card.
4. Install the XAP anew.

That wouldn't save apps' settings if they were stored locally, but I am pretty sure, it'll cut you a slack for installing new apps.
