I don't have a Xbox Music pass, but the app still lets me search for any song and album and play the full length tracks on demand for free. There are adds, that pop up periodically, but its still free and no music pass subscription.

Is this right? I have Lumia 928 windows phone and can't open the Xbox music app unless I have a music pass.

Seems the Surface 2 has more flexibility than the windows phone.

There's the answer! It's like Spotify and Skype; the base service is free, as to get a large user base, and the more users there are, the more people will upgrade to "premium", or whatever they call it. Since the Surface Tablet is essentially a computer but on an ARM processor, it's free. But you have to upgrade to use it on your phone. Hope this helped!
