Surface 3 and docking station to external monitor problems

I recently purchased the Surface 3 (not Pro) with docking station for my high schooler. We have tried mini display port to VGA, and mini display port to HDMI cables/connections - neither will work. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any thoughts for troubleshooting?
