surface book wont recognise Garmin Sat Nav with usb data lead

i have been trying to update my Garmin Nuvi sat nav on my surface book,. problem is when plugged into wither usb port the sat nav will switch on and chare but the surface book wont recognise it as a disc drive for data transfer. I have brought a brand new genuine garmin data usb lead to no avail. I have read that with the garmin I souldn't use a usb hub bit plug directly into the PC/Laptop. With the surface book the usb ports are on the keyboard and the main pc components are the tablet. could this be the issue?? and that the garmin thinks its plugged into a usb hub?? I have tried everything I can think off down to uninstalling the usb ports/host controllers and re booting etc but still cant get anywhere. All my other devices work fine (usb dvd drive, phone connection)
I have plugged the garmin into my surface pro2 and it works perfectly and it works on my girlfriends laptop so the issue seems to be with the surface book. I am open to any helpful suggestions
