Surface Pro (1st gen) stuck on please wait - SOLVED

Just bought a Surface Pro (1st gen) new from Amazon (marketplace vendor, but fulfilled through Amazon). Got it yesterday and selected download and install updates as the first thing. I believe 84 updates. They downloaded, installed, then the Surface restarted once or twice and is now endlessly stuck on the blue "please "wait" message with spinning circle.

I don't believe this was the update to 8.1, just software updates. On both a Surface 2 and Surface RT, I remember doing the 8.1 update after the updates were finished.

On one of the restarts I think the message said Microsoft Services failure and then something like redoing ... that's when it got into the endless please wait.

I've tried turning off and restarting, but it comes back to please wait. Last night, I shut down (or hibernate/sleep - not sure what it is defaulted to on a new machine?), turned on this morning and it said it was restarting. I thought everything was going to be good, but it ended up back at the blue please wait screen.

Waited for another hour, then tried restarting, hitting esc, but nothing. Still please wait.

While it's awake and spinning on please wait, I can see in on the network.

Suggestions? Help? :crying:

Updaten:

I found a walk-through on how to do a refresh and was able to get back to the log-in screen. Then I did an update troubleshoot and Windows reported that it found and fixed 2 problems.

I am going to try to do the updates again (85). I'll let you know.

Success! But not through a refresh. Had the same problem with the refresh: "Failure configuring Windows update ... Reverting changes."

In case anyone runs into this problem, I solved problem using a solution that worked for another:

Type Windows key +R
Type msconfig.exe and enter
Select Services tab on the top of the page
Check the box on the bottom that says Hide all Microsoft Services
Click Disable all
Update and restart

And it worked perfectly. I'm now installing 8.1 and keeping my fingers crossed

I'd just like to confirm that this worked for me as well! I was able to install all the OS and firmware updates, and am now download Windows 8.1. Thanks so much for following up on this and posting your solution!

I'm blocked in "waiting".. How do yo do the refresh?

Hey, I get the 'please wait' message like you did.....for a week now. I've tried everything. I tried the solution recommended regarding power off, hold volume up button and power button for 15 seconds, release and wait 10 seconds and power on. Nothing happened except the same 'please wait message. I have a touch keyboard. Is the volume up button on the top row fourth from the left?
