Surface Pro 2 and Samsung Plasma TV as a monitor

So as per my last thread, I broke my SP2, and finally got back a working replacement (had to send the first replacement back).

Anyways, like an ***** I left my SD card in my original SP2 with all my backup files, so I'm trying to redo all my settings. I'm pretty sure I have most of them back, but I'm having issues with my TV.

I used to hook up my SP2 to my TV and use it to watch movies, I would have it set so only the TV would display, and the Surface Panel would turn off while my adapter was plugged in, but now my TV shows mode not supported when I switch to only display monitor 2. It works fine if I have it as duplicate or in extended mode, but as soon as I switch it to Monitor 2 only, I get mode not supported.

The only thing that has changed is my Surface Pro 2, I've done all the updates since I got it back, so I don't understand why it's not working. It's the same Microsoft Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter, and the same HDMI cable as before. I even tried another HDMI cable just cause.

Any ideas? The TV is a Samsung Plasma PN51D450 if that helps. I checked their website and they don't have any drivers or anything. And I don't remember doing anything special with my previous SP2. I know the TV can't handle 1080p, but I have the resolution set properly.

I'd try adjusting the resolution and refresh rate in the Surface's display settings for that second monitor - it's not able to handle what the Surface is giving it.

I have, set the refresh to 60, tried every resolution setting, even the ones that I know don't work, and they work in duplicate or extended, but not in 2nd monitor only.

That TV is 720P only. It's designed to take a 720P or 1080i signal. The highest progressive signal it can get is 720P.

Extend mode is super flexible and allows differing resolution and refresh rate which is why it will work.

Looking in the instruction manual, the only resolution that is supported is 1360x768 60 Hz which is a nonstandard PC resolution. Could you possibly be using the Intel HD Graphics utility to make your adjustments previously? The standard Windows one probably can't do that odd resolution but the Intel utility might be able to.

I am aware it's 720p, and yes the windows display settings can do 1360x768. I still get the same problem. Works on mirror or extended, but will not accept as monitor 2 only.

I will try using the intel HD graphics utility, I can't remember if I had it on my last SP2 or not.

Got the Intel HD Graphics Utility, and now it outputs to only my Television.

I feel like a bit of an ***** for not trying that first before coming here, but I could have sworn I didn't have it on my previous SP2 as you have to purposely go out and update your driver manually to get it.

Either way, it works now, and thank you for the suggestion.

Glad you got it sorted. Definitely sounds like a bug in the standard display settings though.
