What causes the Surface Pro 2 to sometimes not go to sleep and then just run hot and have the fan kick on? Twice I've went back to my Surface Pro 2 and it was it and the fan was running. I had powered it off (set to sleep) and closed the cover before this happened. Runaway app?

open up task manager and take a look at what apps you have open.

you can see which apps are using up cpu power.

Yeah, I tried that...nothing was taking up CPU yet it was hot and fan was running. My original Pro did this from time to time. :(

something doesn't sound right
the fans on my SP2 are yet to kick in
..and I've been stressing it a bit, running games and such

Sounds like putting the system to sleep, fails, and a bug makes the SP2 CPU loose all power management system.
(I don't have any Surface product yet, so I can't test anything)

You can diagnose the sleep system of Windows by simply:
-> Open the command prompt as Administrator (Win+X > select: Command prompt (Admin)).
Then type: cd c:\, hit ENTER
Then type: powercfg -energy, hit ENTER

Am HTML report will be generated in C:\
Have a look.
