Surface Pro 2, Running hotter in Win10 then Win 8

So is anyone notice that there Surface Pro 2 is running hotter about 60'C. I use to idle about 40-50C now its 50-60'C. Start watching with Java or HTML 5 video it starts to get 70-80. Thermal cutout is 90 i believe. IT never use to do it on HTML5 videos. Anyone else experiencing this or is me. Once i start gaming Yes gaming it gets up to about 85'C. I'm in an A/C'd server room so its pretty cold. IT still reaching that temp. I really don't want to go back to Win8, anyone got a Solution

My Surface Pro 3 is definitely running the fan more often, and seems hotter. I read that this was a known problem "for some laptops" and that Intel and MS were coming out with a patch. I'm going to wait for it. I can't believe it'll take them that long to get it out.

I am experiencing the same issue since installing Windows 10 yesterday, its much hotter and running as high as 72'C at one point this morning. I noticed the case was warmer than I can ever remember while using in my lap to read and respond to email.

I've been using Windows 10 Insider on a Thinkpad all year and while it was interesting to go through the upgrade process, there is nothing keeping me from going back to 8.1 on my Surface. Windows 10 does chew my battery at a faster rate -- not happy about that either -- has to be the fan running ..

Same here with my SP2. I must say that after a couple of reboots it went almost back to normal. It does indeed use the fan more often than before and gets much hotter just by doing simple tasks. I suppose Microsoft will release a fix sooner rather than later when they narrow down the issue.

I have my SP2 sitting here all but idle, and the fan has been running full boar since turning her on. Battery seems to drop faster, and while I have no timer results to go off of, I'd swear it's charging noticeably slower, too. That would make sense if the battery is draining faster, just that I have no objective proof. An update to fix this would be well received with me.

Same problems with my SP2. Definitely running hotter and the fan is always on.

Bizarrely my battery doesn't even seem to charge properly anymore and drains in about 1 hour. It was fine before installing Win 10.

Since installing windows 10 on release day my SP2 battery has been draining fast. Before the upgrade would get through all day without recharge, 8am - 10pm. Now I'm lucky if I get to Noon, something is terrible wrong with windows 10 power consumption. I have noticed that my SP2 doesn't properly sleep which may explain a lot but still doesn't explain the heat coming off of the tablet that I didn't happen in windows 8. I am going to uninstall some third party applications and see if it improves.

I have huge battery issues on my SP2. Not sure what the issue is but I'm lucky if I get 3 hours out of it. Anyone know when the intel/MS patch is coming out? They said they know about the power problems.

Don't have a SP2, but I have an HP Stream 7 that is hot as coal after installing 10. Doesn't do it on my miix 2 or surface 3. Must be chipset driver issue. I'm sure Microsoft will sort it all out here soon. My miix 2 had performance issues at first until it downloaded a new Intel HD driver update about two hours later.

Since upgrading to Win10 on my SP3 (i7/500gb) a few days ago, it's burning up! Fan is on constantly, even for the most trivial task. Anyone have a sense of when MS will have driver updates or patch for remedy?? Seriously annoying!

I'm seeing the same thing with SP3 with i7. So hot I can't stand to hold it in area where CPU is located. Battery life also sucks.

When I was running 10 on it (or at least, the 10240 build), my Pro 2 never stayed asleep, and stayed in turbo mode (2.3GHz) the vast majority of the time (instead of idling back to 900MHz). I'd keep an eye on that to see if it's the cause.

Ok, I was playing around with some things, and I'm hoping someone can test something for me that seems to have made a difference. No promises, but some things appear to have stabilized a bit. I had turned on Hey Cortana at some point, but since turning it off (Leaving Cortana enabled still) seems to have made a giant help. Frankly, I don't even remember turning Hey Cortana on, so it's not hurting me being off. I was (un)installing some things and nothing seemed to affect it till I checked Cortana's settings.

EDIT: Well, upon further usage, it doesn't seem to have done much after all. I guess it was playing opossum.

Mine refuses to sleep now too.

Even if I put It manually to sleep, within 4-5 seconds the screen comes alive again. Something is borked. And this is with nothing attached (even the type cover) and no SD card installed. The 'powercfg /energy' audit lists 2 USB Composite devices that fail USB Selective Suspend, preventing sleep. I'll have to try uninstalling those two and see if that fixes it.

Edit: Looks like one of the devices is the Marvell 350N Wireless adapter so may go in search of alternate drivers. I've enabled hibernate mode so at least I can force it to slumber in some way.

I am also experiencing heating issues with my SP2. I am using power management to turn the fans to passive and drastically decrease the power to the CPU. Unfortunately, this results in everything becoming a little sluggish as it drastically cuts down on the CPU frequency. The only upside is that it seems to work in keeping the heat down to tolerable levels and increase battery life a bit. I've currently raised the power to 60% to see if it's workable without the heat issue building. Still experimenting with power management and hopefully hit a sweet spot between heat/speed until a patch can come around to resolving this issue.

UPDATE: It looks like things are under control for now. I'm using Aida64 and realtemp to monitor the heating issue and clocks. I've noticed it seems to be behaving now, but I'm not sure if it was also because I was able to successfully push and install the July 2015 firmware for the SP2.

Here's what my SP2 is now showing at idle and running AMIDuOS briefly to push temps and clocks. Though I only used it for around 10 minutes to see what it would be like. I'm also using passive cooling (and the fans did not kick in during this test).

Using "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" it listed the following as wake candidates:

HID-compliant mouse
HID-compliant mouse (001)
Surface Type Cover Filter Device
HID Keyboard Device (001)

Going into the Device Manager, Power Management tab for each device and turning off (i.e. unchecking) "Allow this device to wake the computer" seems to have solved preventing it going to sleep. I tried differing combinations of having some of these on and some off and for me, it only works if they are all off.

EDIT: I left Surface Pro 2 on last night, closed the type cover and put it away. Took it out 20 hours later, battery life was still full from last night. Had the same scenario a few days ago and the battery went from 80-100% to 10%, so I think that did the trick, thanks!
