I've been here on this forum, back when the SP3 was released and I didn't pull the trigger - much to my chagrin.

I'm at a point, that I'm now willing and able too, one question I have is running an external monitor.

How's the SP3, driving a 24" monitor?

I have another question which is far more obscure - does anyone have any input on the SP3 driving an apple cinmea display (mini-displayport)?

The Christmas incentives are tempting for the SP3, but if I wait until 2015, my company will kick in some $$ making it a lot more affordable, so patience is the key.

I have a SP2 connected to a 20" monitor using the Apple mini display port and it works fine so I'm sure you wouldn't have any problems with the SP3.

I plug into my 21" monitor without any issues. Don't see why 24 would be a problem.

Resolution is the thing to consider here, not display size. The SP3 drives a 2160x1440 touchscreen smoothly, so any external monitor with the same or lower resolution should be fine. I sometimes drive an external 1080p display and use the SP3 as an extended screen. Handles it pretty well, though I don't do anything graphically taxing. So it seems capable of driving some pretty high resolutions depending on what you're doing.

I am running a SP3 with the docking station and a dell 28 inch 4k monitor. It works great!

Thanks for the great answers, I was worried about needing an adapter, it also seems to be that the SP3 should handle the monitor as well.

I can tell you that when u put an Apple laptop against an normal monitor (Dell, Sony, BenQ or whatever) and the monitor has 2k or 4k support. Apple's laptop wont put those resolutions to the monitors. Only Apple's Thunderbolt ( Apple's own monitor) will give u 2k or 4k support. And if u put an SP3 to an Thunderbolt monitor it wont work on 4k.

If u want to go around take any monitor or display u want. Go for SP3.

Its an older non thunderbolt monitor, so I'm not concerned about 4k. I forget how old it is, but its in the range of 4 years old. Based on the advice it seems likely that it won't have a problem.

The official SurfaceTeam in reddit has those questions covered:
i7 and i5 will drive 1x4K, or 2x2K while supporting SP3's own 2K display.
i3 will drive 1x4K, or 2xHD while supporting SP3's own 2K display.

No worries, your SP3 will drive your monitor.

As i already said, is that when you connect the SP3 to an Apple thunderbolt monitor. You wont get 2K or 4K if the thunderbolt support these resolutions. The fact is that Apple don't support SP3 or any other Windows device.

But what you say is also very helpful :)

I know this reply is a bit late, however, I can tell you with certainty that the SP3 i5/i7 work fine with the older Apple LED Cinema display (mini displayport) and the newer Apple Thunderbolt monitor. I have both at my office and have used the Surface with both of them without issues.
