Surface Pro or Surface 2

Hey everyone, so I am very torn on whether I should buy a surface pro or surface 2.

I understand they are very different machines as the SP runs windows 8 and the S2 runs windows RT. I found a 128gb SP (with type cover) online for $465 or a 64gb S2 online for about $400(also with type cover). I want a tablet to take to classes and web browsing and such which makes me think that I should get the surface 2. But I'm worried that I will be disappointed with the windows RT OS.

I do like the look of the S2 more and the longer battery life is nice, but the SP will have a faster processor and the full windows 8 experience. I do have a nice gaming laptop that I got only last year (so I'm not getting this to replace my PC), I just don't like lugging it around to classes everyday and think a tablet will do the job much better.

Another thing I really like about the S2 is the adjustable kickstand, is that a big deal to people? Is that something the SP1 is lacking? Also I don't really care for the stylus. even if I got the SP1 I doubt I would use the stylus at all.

I'm just wondering which tablet am I getting for a better value in the end. I understand the pros and cons of each but just don't know which device is actually better.

I'd get Surface 2 considering the fact that you're not planning to replace your laptop. Surface Pro is going to be considerably heavier and the battery life might not work on your side if your typical day includes more than two classes in a row.

The two step kickstand is also a big plus, with the Pro you'll be afraid that people behind you will get a better view than you.

Things to consider:
- Only MSIE 11 for the Surface 2. No choice of browsers. MSIE 11 on Windows RT does not support browser plug-ins nor Java. If you plan on using the device at a university, make sure that your classes won't require you to visit a website that requires Java or browser plug-ins.

- You cannot install non-Microsoft Store apps. If your classes require the use of software that is not available in the MS App Store, you will be out of luck.

Browser the MS App Store for the type of apps that you think you would want to use with the Surface. Make sure that not only that the apps exists, but that their functionality is acceptable. I've seen apps from a developer where their Modern UI version is a pale imitation of what they produce for other platforms.

If after doing all of that you feel comfortable, go for the Surface 2. Doing those preliminary steps will greatly increase the chances that you will be delighted with it.

Surface 2 should work just fine for what you want to do. I have a Surface Pro I am selling because I don't use any other apps than what is included on it anyway. I have a work laptop and a desktop if I ever do need anything else, but the big thing about the Surface 2 is the battery life. I get between 5-6 ours with the SP, but with a Surface 2 you should be expecting to get triple that.

I have a Surface Pro (Also purchased on a very good deal here in the UK) mine is also the 128.

When my wife saw it she said where is my tablet so I got her a Surface 2.

The Surface 2 is so much lighter with far better battery life, if all you want it for is basic stuff with apps then the Surface 2, however if you have a mind to run full blown programs the Surface Pro would be the better choice. The pen comes in handy when using full blown desktop stuff and even control panel etc.

I wouldn't swap but do appreciate the lightness of the S2
