I'm a T-Mobile customer but planning to switch to AT&T. Assuming AT&T won't sell Nokia L920 w/o a contract yet so I'm planning to buy an unlocked Nokia L920 from a different retailer/store. I'll be moving out of the country sometime next year. I still have about 5-7 months left before I leave so I was wondering if it's possible to switch to AT&T and just cancel my service before I leave.

If you bring your own unlocked GSM phone, go on a 30 day and out contract. That's what I have.

What exactly do you mean by 30 days? Like I sign up for AT&T and just tell them I just want their "30 days service"?

Don't sign a 2 year contract. Ask for a 30 day and out contract, so your service is month by month. You can cancel it at anytime.

I appreciate your help. Thanks but I have one more question.
So when I cancel my T-Mobile service, do you think it's possible for AT&T to use my old number(T-Mobile number)?

Yes, you will just pay full retail for the phone, go to ATT and get on one of the plans. As long as you are not getting a discounted phone, you can cancel anytime.

If ATT announces the phone to be $199 with a 2 year contract and you buy the phone for $199, you can cancel with an Early termination fee of $325 less $10 every month.

If you do what you say and buy it from lets say amazon or bestbuy without a contract, you can use ATT and then cancel without a fee.
