Symbians still outsold Lumias.......

Nokia sold 4 million Lumias, yet they sold 6 million Symbians.

I am extremely disappointed by this. How?!

This generation Symbian handsets are probably some of THE most underwelming phones on the market. (The Pureview doesn't really count, it was released at the end of the quarter).

On the Symbian side, we have the 603 (Symbian version of the Lumia 710), the 700 (a mini sized phone), and the 701 (A rehash of the C7). All these phones had EDOF cameras, uninspirering design, minimal app support, non-existant marketing, and almost no future.

The lumia series should be able to outsell them by a HUGE margin, but how did the Symbians still outsell the Lumias?

I am willing to bet that if you add up sales of all the lumias, the titan 2, the focus 2, and the focus S, you can barely get 6 million.

I've read various estimates that put WP around 12-15 million. And Nokia had a decent lineup of Symbian devices prior to adopting WP. There are still some diehard Symbian fans out there so it doesn't surprise me that people are still buying them. But if you look at past Symbian sales you'd see just how far the numbers have dropped.

Yeah Symbian is HUGE in the middle east/Asian market as well!!!

lots of diehard fans!! Yipeekiyay!! lol

Symbian is sold in places that havent even heard of WP, no surprise they are still outselling the Lumia range. Lets not go into the reasons why the Lumia range itself isnt selling more now....:dry

Most of the Symbian phones are dirt cheap.

WP won't compete with Symbian in those markets for at least another year or two. I imagine WP8 for premium devices and WP7 on cheap devices.

You kind of skipped over the part where they shipped 73 million handsets this quarter then?

Nokia has and always will (probably) sell more dumbphones than smartphones.

It they were relying solely on WP sales they would have shut down before the Lumia line even got to market.

Symbian and their Asha range are Nokia's bread and butter and (along side the MS support) pay for the R&D, design and production of new Windows Phones.

I'm the guy who bought a N95 for 600$.....

Symbian devices are not cheap this generation.

Off contract, the 603 is a bit more than 200$ in line with Lumia 710 prices(of course, they are pretty much the same phone)

The 700 and 701 is slightly cheaper than the Lumia 800. They are proximately 300$ off contract.

As for the Pureview 808, it is more expensive than the Lumia 900.

In my opinion, Windows phone should be for Nokia's mainstream and high end devices.

Symbian should be kept for the ultra low end, considering Symbian's minimal system requirements.

Yes I know that Asha is nokia's bread and butter (more than 60 million sold), but Symbian should replace it. I mean, the latest Asha "feature phones" are higher specced than many Symbian phones internally.

Trying to force Windows Phone into the ultra low end is not a good idea. I mean, just think about what will happen with the Lumia 610? Would it even get 7.8?

I hope they never kill off Symbian. There are still people, like my parents who want an updated touchscreen device, but without the data plans. The only options they have right now are these crappy prepaid LG phones with their own OS, and the likes, that you can buy at Radioshack. None of them are particularly pleasing. You can tell they're crappy phones by just looking at them. I've been looking and seriously considering Nokia Ashas to replace their aging qwerty phones.

What's all this talk about WP7 low end phones for the future. This Fall WP8 will replace WPx, at the very low and very high ends of the Smartphone range. Yes, like today, the low end WP8s will have some limitations but the will still be as smooth and fluid as ever.

You can buy a 15" laptop today for $349 or for $899. They all run the same OS. No different with phones.

I don't think that the high-end Symbian phones are where the big sales are coming from. It's the cheap ones. Well, and the feature phones of course.

As for WP going to low end. I look at it more as low end going to WP.

I believe that Nokia, and maybe some others, will continue to sell WP7 devices for the next 2 yrsin emerging markets side-by-side with higher and mid-level WP8 devices. By that time, phones with specs similar to the 710 would be considered low-end and very affordable. The 610 will be insanely cheap.

Is that not the definition of fragmentation? Has anyone stated that WP8 "requires" more processors, more memory, an NFC chip, a higher res screen or expandable memory to work. No, these are all options. Some which may or may not appear on low-end WP8 devices. Keeping WP7 devices in the mix after the release of WP8 would add more confusion to an already confusing mobile landscape.

Of course. Regions outside North America and Europe have much high populations and Symbian uptake is still popular there.
