SYNCING contacts with Outlook workaround.

as WP8 only wants to sync with outlook if you spend on a subscription for exchange ( i don't ) i was looking how to get my 300+ contacts from my SE P990 and outlook ( they sync great ) to the ATIV s . the ATIV doesn't recognise the format used on the P990 for bluetooth transfer, and when i tried a sim card transfer it missed letters out of names and called every number a mobile number, still no use to me. thought i'd try and see if my brother with a samsung galaxy S3 LTE could bluetooth one of his contatcts to me ok? we picked one with email and multiple phone numbers and an address, and it went from the S3 to the ATIV and eveything was listed as it should be. ( didn't try anything with a picture id attached? DOH! ) so as the android S3 can import contacts from outlook we are going to back up his S3, do a factory reset, sync my contacts into his S3 and then bluetooth the lot over. then factory reset the S3 again and restore all his stuff. this way i get everthing as it should be without having to do them all individually. winner.!



it might be that the trial version/time of office 365 that is available will allow you to sync your contacts and keep them there even if you don't actually subscribe to exchange and then you delete the trial version?? but i'm not bothering to see. it just means that all new contacts and ones to delete will have to be done on both machines and no syncing can take place, but i don't use the diary/callender so i'm not bothered.

You have a live Id. So set that up in outlook. Drag all your outlook contacts to the live Id contacts. Then they will be in sync.

i sort of do, i have a an xbox live id from years ago and also an MSN id which both used the same email address to set up years ago. the xbox live i'd associated with that email address shows up on the phone with all the contacts even though i used the MSN id in the phone. i haven't used the xbox live for years, but my son took over the id. so now i get to see on the phone, all his xbox friends and their status's etc, i can send them messages etc, in HIS name, and i don't know most of them. i think it is quite wrong that i get to see all his stuff just because microshaft have decided that all stuff from all accounts of differing types get lumped together. i don't want to add my contacts through hotmail incase microtoss decide they should all show up on his xbox???? i guess an option would be to set up another microsoft id with a different email address and start again? but i just want my contacts, on my phone, and not sent to anywhere else.

CALENDAR

Within outlook in your calendar tab, you should see multiple calendars now that you have them linked to your outlook.com account. It should look something like:

Birthday Calendar
Calendar (This is the calendar for your desktop outlook that you have been using)
Fred's Calendar (this is the calendar from outlook.com/hotmail.com/live.com)
US Holidays

You need to copy all of your information from the native outlook calendar (labeled "Calendar"), to the one designated for your .com calendar (Fred's Calendar). This can easily be done from within the desktop outlook client by clicking on calendar and then going to the "view" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen. From there, select "change view", and then choose "list". Copy all of your appointments from the "Calendar" just like you would an excel spreadsheet and then paste them in "Your name Calendar", which should also be in the "list" view setting. Once that is done, you can change your view setting back to "calendar"

Then, from now on, un-check the box for the native desktop outlook (calendar) and check the one for the hotmail/live/outlook.com calendar (Fred's Calendar), and you are good to go. The old calendar will stay there, it will just be hidden from view. After that, just treat Fred's Calendar the same way you did your other calendar within outlook. Add all future new appointments to that calendar.

If you ever switch, just do the reverse and you will have all of your appointments back in the native desktop client calendar and can go from there.

This process should take less than 5 minutes and you will be good to go.

NOTE: It may take a couple of hours for all of your appointments to be synced between your desktop outlook, your live.com calendar, and your Windows Phone, particularly if you have many of them. Don't panic and don't think that something went wrong when appointments start showing up in your phone sporadically. Give it several hours to overnight to sync. I freaked out when I did this and thought it didn't work which caused me to have to go through the process again. Then the same thing happened and I just left it alone overnight and in the morning, everything was synced perfectly.

After that, it become a process of minutes when adding or deleting one or two appointments. Since my initial set up where I was trying to sync several years worth of appointments, I have had no problem at all and things sync very quickly.

CONTACTS

For contacts, it is very similar. Once you link your e-mail account (outlook, live, hotmail) to your desktop outlook client, under your contacts tab within outlook, you will see three choices (contacts within your personal folders, suggested contacts, and contacts for your e-mail address). Simply copy the ones from your personal folder over to the one for your e-mail address and then just use that one from there on in. That will sync with your live/hotmail/outlook.com account as well as your phone.

I have had zero issues with either the calendar or the contacts when using this method.

On problem with syncing contacts from Outlook to Outlook.com is that contact photos won't sync. Of course for some people, that doesn't matter, but i prefer syncing my contact photos from Outlook and have to use Sync 2 and Google.

in the end i saved my outlook contacts as VCF files and was able to bluetooth them over to the ativ s, BUT !! you can only send one at a time so it is time consuming. sucking them from another device with a compatible bluetooth sync option would be the best stand alone option without the need for clouds and sky and .com rubbish

One of the issues in exporting Outlook offline contacts to the Microsoft Mail Server which is used for synchronization is that only those contacts with an email address are transferred.
