Tethering iPhone?

So, I have been using my old iPhone for awhile now but I am seriously considering the move back to my 950xl.
My main question is if I could just tether my old iPhone for other apps and iMessage?
I know tethering would be fine for most things but I am concerned that I may miss out of texts if I leave iMessage enabled on the iPhone.

Anyone have any experience?

If you tether the iPhone, it'll get iMessages, but then you'll have to deal with getting texts on both the 950 XL and iPhone, but only when the iPhone is connected to the internet.

I would go one or the other, unless you don't mind juggling devices and having tethering on constantly.

I was somewhat worried about duplicate texts, but more concerned about missing texts or iMessages.
Really all I need iMessage for is some group chats which I wish they would just switch to WhatsApp, but stubborn Apple fans can't get off their beloved iMessage.
