Apple would be stupid not to do something like this, particularly if they are launching devices with larger screens. They need to make use of that extra space somehow, particularly now when even the average Joe is catching on how iOS is, from a users perspective, just a glorified app launcher.

The question is, if Apple cares that much for new customers or if they continue to be happy serving those who already use their products. From my observations Apple users are the by far most loyal customers I've ever seen.
Nevertheless, Apple needs to do something, because iOS is starting to become as outdated as Windows Mobile has been.
