To buy or not to buy a Surface

So, I am thinking about getting a surface (not sure about RT or Pro yet) but I already have an Acer w700 (with i5). I got it about a year ago and it came with plenty of extras (Case/Cover, BT keyboard, Dock). I can do pretty much anything I want with it (which is mostly run visual studio for lunchtime coding/browsing) and while I would like more space, i'm making do. At home I pretty much just dock it and perhaps use it as a cheat screen when playing games/learning combos etc.

I'd like to get a surface but honestly my w700 is so closely spec'd to the pro's that aside from the next gen chip, sd slot and general "niceness" of the surface brand I'm probably better off without it (love the bigger screen of my w700).

I guess what I what I want to know is, what are you guys/gals doing with your surface and what do you like most about it?

You obviously don't need a Surface and you don't see any reason to buy it. However, if you have enough money to justify searching in a web forum for a reason to spend it anyway, then you should definitely go for it.

That Acer runs full Windows 8, not RT. Sounds like you're set. Don't let the excitement about the new gen Surfaces cause you to feel discontent with your Acer. It's a fine system and if you happy with it, continue to be.

I've got a Surface RT, and love it (considering the price that I paid for it), but on occasion feel a twinge of wanting to upgrade to the 2.

I didn't need one, I wanted one. Very glad I got it. It has mostly replaced my iPad.

That Acer runs full Windows 8, not RT. Sounds like you're set. Don't let the excitement about the new gen Surfaces cause you to feel discontent with your Acer. It's a fine system and if you happy with it, continue to be.

After reading the review by Thurrott, I think I'm going to pick up an RT. I'll probably just play with it, but it'll mostly be for the wife as her old vista machine and 1st gen Kindle have one foot in the grave.

I say this more for your wife than for you. I think my wife and I use our technology probably closer to your wife than Paul T.


As someone that has built my last three desktops for gaming, I plan to get a Surface 2. There are some advantages to RT that I think most people ignore- no AV protection to slow things (on an Atom) down, a good chance your existing accessories will work (compare that to an iPad, Kindle, etc), and access to a real productivity suite. My desktop is mostly for one or two desktop games these days as I prefer to play on my Xbox... of course I have way less time than when I built my first. My wife really only uses her laptop as storage for music (not sure she realizes she could use her external drive on our Surface RT). So essentially we went from using 2 computers with feature phones to using one Surface RT with two WP8s. The only reason I plan to get a Surface 2 is so she can use her Surface RT for work like she originally got it- I currently take it for my job.

Side note- I'll end up getting a Type Cover 2. We have a Touch Cover that works well enough. I'll still have to try the Touch Cover 2, but I drop letters left and right with the original. I guess I am probably more accurate than with a normal keyboard because I pay more attention to keys. It is just annoying when you hit a letter and it doesn't register, which makes it so I net using the backspace about the same or more with the Touch Cover.
