This is a very real problem hosted by the clueless morons in Verizon stores (corp and non corp), and a HUGE reason whey Windows Phone is struggling.

We made Microsoft aware of this back in the WP7 days, through tweets to JB and others. Someone even started a blog, wptattletale.com New site aims to name and shame bad Windows Phone 7 retailers | WinRumors, Greg Sullivan was asked about it and gave the standard response, "we are working with our partners". Elop was asked about it at the 1020 launch, took a bullet for the carriers. After all these years, nothing has changed. And with Microsoft's new-found love of ios and android and neglect of WP, I doubt they care anymore.

The stigma is not just tied to phones, the above picture is of a Lumia 2520 taken in a prominent store (Currys, Westfield - Stratford).

The main reason why I no longer go in to phone or electronic stores to look at phones anymore, the whole experience is just beyond aggravating to put it mildly.

windows phone is struggling solely due to this .. the app problem is there but this is a bigger problem than that .. and its turning a lot of customers away from windows phones .. which is sad ..
