Today whilst browsing the main site and reading through a few articles I've been inundated with notifications from my virus checker about a 'Trojan Horse Exploit SWF_C.aps' virus.

I only get the notification whilst browsing windowscentral.com on the main page, forums seem fine.

Would be nice to know what antivirus you are using, to compare. since I have no issue like that on 3 separate machines from which I access the main site.

Also you might want to try Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free to check if there are any exploits already on the machine.

It could easily be that it gets recognized on the site by the AV because it tries to do something specific.

I concur.

For reporting purposes could you add what machine, OS and version, browser and AV used...

Screen shots of the page(s) where this occurs and also a screen shot of the detection note would also be helpful.

Machine, Surface Pro 3 i5
OS, Windows 10 Pro 10586.29
Browser, Edge
AV, AVG Free 2016.0.7303
