Trouble with fingerprint scanner type cover, how can I fix it?

Trouble with fingerprint scanner type cover

Just got a new Surface Pro 3 and a Type Cover with fingerprint ID. It only works about half the time though. If I disconnect and reconnect the keyboard and it works fine. If I change and log in via a PIN and then try fingerprint scanning again, it also works.

Any suggestions?

when doesn't it work? when starting from hibernation/sleep?
