UPDATE 1: Superseded by UPDATE 2 and 3! YAY! :smile:

*********************************************

UPDATE 2: For those ppl who have no access to Field Test Menu or want to downgrade to WP 8, please download the Vietnam Black ROM as suggested by http://forums.windowscentral.com/members/glembozt.htm - I am very grateful to you. The ROM allows you to go to field test through ##3282# :smile: :smile: :smile:

*********************************************

UPDATE 3: After flashing Vietnam Black ROM, you can upgrade to WP 8.1 and field test still works. For flashing there is a very good and detailed guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515453 and here http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/46835/ (very pictorial) - Follow it very carefully and no need to be afraid as if there is any mistake, the upgrade wont happen!
Download Vietnam ROMS (Notes: 1. Please keep in mind that the Product Type should match with the ROM (RM-XXX), product code may vary; 2. Please rename files with name "something-RMXXX-something" to "RMXXX-something", there should be six files like this):
---> Lumia 520 (RM-914): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/74886/
---> Lumia 620 (RM-846): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/81671/
---> Lumia 720 (RM-885): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/81102/#post-1342052
---> Lumia 820 (RM-825): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/78829/#post-1305087
---> Lumia 920 (RM-821): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/74599/#post-1245112
---> Lumia 1020 (RM-875): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/82016/
---> Lumia 1320 (RM-994 and RM-996): RM-996 is the only Vietnam Product Type, others are 994, dont know what to do???
---> Lumia 1520 (RM-937): http://www.winphoneviet.com/forum/index.php?threads/66952/

Phew!!! Quite a task reading in Vietnam. Anyways, let me know if there is any mistake and thank the original posters.

The Original Post is below:

I am not writing anything original here but simplifying the steps to Developer Unlock Lumia WP8 phones without downloading Full SDK 8.0 and set them to 3G only mode. The steps can be used on both Win 7 as well as Win 8 32 or 64 bit systems. I am making this tutorial as I love my Lumia but was disappointed that in my living room the 3G signal was weak and hence the phone automatically switched to 2G. Also I have read in numerous posts that field test has been disabled in many Lumia phones like mine. Therefore to help others as well as to make a reminder for myself, I thought to compile this tutorial. I just love my Lumia. So no long talk, lets list the steps: (Please note that these steps work on Win8 32 as well as Win8 64 bit systems that I have, I haven't tried on Win 7 but might work as reported by some users)

What you need:
1. Win 7/ Win 8 32 or 64 bit systems
2. Your WP8 Lumia Phone connected to PC via USB and screen unlocked all the time during the steps (Increase the lock screen timeout to 5 min temporarily or keep unlocking manually)
2. Internet Connection
3. Hotmail / Live ID
4. Patience (A little! Still I am trying to list direct links wherever possible)

Steps to Developer Unlock your Lumia WP8:
1. Create a live ID/ hotmail ID or nothing to do if you already have one
2. [Only for Win7 Users/ Skip this step if you have Win 8 32/64 bit system] Download and Install the latest dotnet from Microsoft. Here is Version 4.5: Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 from Official Microsoft Download Centre / Direct link: Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 (Offline Installer) from Official Microsoft Download Centre
3. Download WP Mini SDK from here: http://forums.windowscentral.com/so...343-tut-install-full-wp8-sdk-windows-7-a.html / Direct link: Zippyshare.com - WP8 SDK Tools Lite Setup Av1.0.zip
4. Install the Mini SDK downloaded in Step 3. Simply unzip and run the InstallWP8SDKToolsLite.bat file -> Click any button and Next Next.. Finish. You will notice two icons in Programs/Start Menu: Windows Phone Developer Registration and Application Deployment.
5. Run Windows Phone Developer Registration. Click Register button. On login screen that follows enter the Live ID / Hotmail ID and password. Wait and Registration Successful. The phone is now Developer Unlocked :smile:

********************************************************************

Steps to set phone to 3G Only Mode:

6. Go to [XAP][SOURCE] Native Toast Notification Launcher - xda-developers and download Native Toast Notification Launcher / Direct link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2174773&d=1375987555
7. Now open Application Deployment from Programs (Refer Step 4), Select 'Device' in Target, Browse the XAP file downloaded in step 6 and click 'Deploy'. Success
8. Now there will be an application called Native Toast Notification Launcher in you WP8 phone. Open the app and copy paste the following: app://2377fe1b-c10f-47da-92f3-fc517345a3c0/_default#/Launcher;component/MainPage.xaml?DialString=3282
9. Click Launch Toast. Click on the notification 'Toast Launcher Click me'
10. Field Test Menu will appear. Click accept. Click Menu button (Three dots) - > Setting - > Network Mode - > 3G Only
11. Enjoy:smile::smile::smile: (NOTE: Whenever you switch off your phone, repeat only Steps 8-10 (Very Easy)

Don't thank me. I am just a compiler. Thank wherever you think the person has written something original! Have a nice day!

Do you know what will happen if I can't have 3G signal at the place I am in? Will my phone answer the callers "the person you have called can not reached at the moment please try again later" or this only affects internet connection I will still have phone signal for talking even there is no 3G?

You will not receive any call.

Well, thats a very bad news. I have upgraded and now am back to square one. Lets see if a kind dev make any breakthrough. I wonder why the MS make things complicated. Tried and tested option like "2G", "3G" and "Auto Mode" would have been better.

I agree. In my case, I used this to force 4G as my phone prefers stronger 3G signal than a weak 4G, even if a weak 4G is definitely faster. But luckily, it seems to now prefer the 4G even though it has a weaker reception. Maybe they tweaked something (?)

You are totally right. I don't understand why this is so difficult to do on Windows Phone. If they can make a phone talk to you (looking at you Cortana) then I would think getting these sort of controls would be easy to do.

Actually Win 8.1 is not an incremental update, but an OS upgrade. Things are gonna work differently here. Now we don't have toasts but notifications, so toast launcher is obsolete. Now some new hack is required - something like notification launcher :)

Sorry WP 8.1, I am very disappointed. Huge battery drain, bad music app (keeps searching for music), media hub disintegrated, no cortana here (India, I know how to get it but not released here), disappointing quick access (why tapping wifi goes to setting!!!), nonsense facebook integration (you gotta comment, it will go to fb app by ms), no chat in messaging AND no way to access field test / fix for 3g only mode. Getting back to good old WP 8. Very disappointing updates after a series of good updates like amber and black.

I was expecting you gonna stick with 8.1 and find the solution. If you gonna go back to 8.0 not sure who else will come to solve this 3g/2g problem. As long as I'm stuck with 3g only. I will stay with 8.1.
