Hello everyone,

It is explain how to put back the power button on surface 2. I tried and it works well :)

It is a copy/paste from here, nice website with lots of tips.
How to add/remove power button in Windows 8.1 Update 1 | Microsoft Surface tablet

A wide range of computers have been installed the Windows 8.1 Update 1. A great feature is an easy-to-find power button in the upper-right corner for setting system to restart, shut down, or sleep and it is helpful while you use a mouse or don?t have a touch screen. However, if you are using the Surface Pro or other tablets, it would be too easy to tap accidentally and become uncomfortable.

How to add/remove power button in Windows 8.1 Update 1
* By default it is enable after the Update 1 have been applied on your device. You should see that it appears on the metro screen.
* From Start screen, swipe in from the right conner to open Charm bar, type regedit in Smart Search box and then select it from the results.
* In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to the location below:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell

* Right-click on ImmersiveShell to open a pop-up menu, select New > Key, input Launcher as the name.
* Then click Launcher and go to the right pane, right click any blank area, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and type Launcher_ShowPowerButtonOnStartScreen for the name.
* Double-click Launcher_ShowPowerButtonOnStartScreen, set the value to 0 and make a rebooting for disabling the screen-based Power button. If you need to get it appearing again, just follow the above method to change the value to 1.

another method would be ...slide to shutdown like in WP .... Goto c:windows/system32/slidetoshutdown and pin that to start and from then on just slide to close the session not many would no that ....works on surface 2pro as it needs the full fledged windows and not RT..... And also touch screen desktops and laptops......

Using this guide posted in the OP I just added the reg key and have the power button back on my RT!
Much appreciated.

Is this the same button as in the charms menu? Is it perferred to make the tablet shut down vs let the screen turn off?

Why do you need a power button on the Start screen? just hit the power button on the top of the Surface device. do you people really totally shut down the surface rather than going to sleep?

I can understand for restarting. But not for the other cases.

Yes. Because "sleep" kills the battery. Nothing worse than leaving your tab unused for a day (unintentionally), then going to use it and finding its dead. I ALWAYS switch it off. Never use sleep.
