what ultimately is cool about the Surface Laptop is how much it can do in such a thin and light package. Sure, you see the skeptics pointing out cheaper machines or more powerful machines. But none of these machines have the same features in the same price range. I see people pointing out the Lenovo X1 Carbon which is actually more expensive, doesn't have a touchscreen, has a 1080P screen, and doesn't have pen input. I see people pointing out the Dell XPS 13 (I actually owned one of these as well). This one also only comes with 4 GB at the $999 price. 1080P touchscreen when buying the touchscreen. A web cam that looks up your nose. I do think the practically bezel-less display is pretty cool but 1080P? I see people pointing out 4 lb laptops. 15" laptops. People shopping for a Surface Laptop are not looking at 15" bricks.
Microsoft isn't designing the Surface Laptop to fit all buyers. If your main goal is bang for the buck, the Surface Laptop isn't for you. But if you want a versatile thin and light laptop with a beautiful touchscreen in high resolution with pen input wrapped in good quality components, then the Surface Laptop is in the discussion.
If I was in the market for a traditional laptop, the Surface Laptop would be up for strong consideration (especially in burgundy!!!). But I'm firmly in the Surface Pro camp and can't imagine getting a laptop anymore. I was done with laptops after the Acer S7 (beautiful for its time) and the Dell XPS 13.
