Hi,

I am trying to connect my 950xl to my pro 4 using the usb-c cable but it just won't detect it. I have tried swapping cables and connecting to other pc with no luck. I tried restarting both the phone and the pc.

Dloaded the windows device recovery tool, but of course that too won't detect the phone.

Any ideas?

Mine detects and asks if I want to connect but that is as far as it goes. All I can do with the computer is charge the phone. This is on a Windows 10 PC and Phone.

just tried to connect my 950xl to my Surface Book. The phone connected and it opened the phone companion app. This was the first time I have tried that so it was cool. Sorry you guys are having an issue. So maybe an issue with SP4 and the 950xl? I'm assuming that all the latest drivers and updates are installed? My SB just got some new drivers last night or the night before

Hey guys,
  • make sure your desktop Win10 is uptodate
  • make sure 950XL is uptodate
  • make sure all apps on 950Xl are uptodate
  • on desktop Win10:
  • Settings>>Devices>>AutoPlay: make all to read:: Open folder to view files
  • Settings>>Devices>>USB: Notify me if there are issues connecting to USB devices
  • Settings>>Devices>>Connected devices (reboot desktop then connect 950XL see WP phone in list pops up)
  • Connecting USB to 950XL: Make sure 1st connect USB to desktop then to 950XL.
  • When disconnecting 950XL from USB cable make sure not just pull it out as you wish but rather goto click on: Safely Remove Harware, select WP, click Disconnect...wait to see if any message tell you files are transferred ...etc. until tells you it is safe to remove WP.
  • When 950XL connection to desktop via USB is normal you hear windows default device connection sound.
  • good luck.

Nope already tried all that, did not work on three different pc :(

make sure you don't have any pocket fluff in the usb-c port messing with the connection maybe? I read somewhere one guy had a bunch of lint in the port and it worked after he cleaned it out

cheers, checked, its all clean

thats another one of the many problems i have with the 950xl - the usb-c cable just keeps slipping out of the connector, I bought a nw cable and that had the same problem

Make sure your phone is unlocked.

That said, I was up here to start a thread, given a USB issue I'm having. While I can connect, it's flaky as all-get-out, even copying over 1.5GB of photos took 6.5 minutes, and it must've taken at least 1-2 minutes, just to enumerate my 150-ish photos in my Camera_Roll folder.
The same 950XL, before the 218 update, was lightning fast over USB, the same exact USB cable. I suppose something could've happened to my USB cable since then, or the connector, maybe...

Is anyone else seeing this? I'll start a more pertinent thread, since this one seems to be about connectivity at all (I wonder how often this is due to a locked phone though).

Actually i stuck a pin in the connector and this plasticky gunk came out, must have been there from day one because now for the first time the cable fits properly, and I can suddenly connect the phone to the pc (albeit a flaky and slow connection) but still a result! And the phone charges up much faster now.

I've tried various fixes to no avail. Here's what worked for me in the end:
- go to device manager. It shows Lumia 950XL but with an exclamation mark.
- right click and select "update driver"
- click on "browse the computer for my driver software"
- click on "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
- pick one of the entries listed as "MTP USB device"

And it worked fine after that. I'm surprised it didn't work right out of the box.

Thanks for the tip about the device manager. I had tried previously removing every reference to USB and then rebooting, to allow the computer to find the correct driver, but that didn't help. Your tip to find the driver manually worked first time! (BTW the MTP device on my (Windows 10 Pro) machine was within the Mobile Devices section.

Still begs the question as to why a Windows 10 phone (Lumia 950) would loose its connection to a Windows 10 PC???
