Unlock my Lumia device

How do I unlock my Lumia 820 from AT&T I called and tried the device unlock portal but they refuse to unlock the phone I'm currently using the new cricket wireless and some things don't work correctly because of it being Locked

I'm an AT&T subscriber, purchased my Lumia 1520 from other than AT&T & they refused to unlock my phone (going thru the unlock portal). Called 611, pointed out to the CSR, I did NOT purchase it from them, paid full price elsewhere, I had the unlock code in a day.

Key is I'm currently on their network, postpaid - you have to be a current or former subscriber.
What was their reason for refusing ?

I upgraded from a Lumia 920 to a Lumia 1520. I was able to keep my 920 and want to sell it. I requested an unlock code from AT&T and they sent it to me but the instructions say I have to insert a non AT&T SIM card to do the unlock process. Is this true or can I just unlock it with my AT&T SIM or no SIM?

Any non AT&T SIM should suffice. You need some form of non-native SIM in to pull up the unlock SIM screen easier.

Can I borrow someone's sim? I don't have one from another carrier.

If you dont use another sim card, just type ##7820# and the screen will prompt to you place the code...
